Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Passan said we picked up Morton’s option.

AJC says Yates’ was declined.

A little surprised by both if true. I still think we need a better pitcher as the #3, but there's a little more wiggle room now. Anthopoulos doesn't have to jump in right away and can the market develop.

I was never a Yates guy. Stuff can be off the charts, but it seems whenever he made a mistake, he didn't get away with it.

I wonder if by picking up the option on Morton it makes it more or less likely that we get a SP on the trade market rather than via FA......If at all. I hope to god that AA doesn't stand pat with the rotation.

Morton gives us a little more wiggle room so I wonder if a trade involving Elder is possible. He should have value. Elder, Grissom, Richie may get you into talks with the White Sox about Robert or Cease.

IMO it feels like less flexibility. If you trade Elder, you still need a SP back, and you are still running with a rookie shuttle bus at #5. A team as good as us shouldn’t be in that spot

I don’t trust Elder starting in the playoffs at all and Morton just a little more than him. If we can trade Elder and upgrade the rotation or LF I’m in. But we need another SP that you would feel comfortable starting in the first 3 games of the playoffs.

I wonder if the AJC got Yates and Hand mixed up. I see that it's reported at MLB that the Braves didn't pick up Hand's option. Nothing on either Morton or Yates.

He wouldn't have been starting if Paw Paw didn't sprain his index finger....

I can't believe they are picking up his option...Why pay a mfer like that at that age $20m and not reallocate those funds to something younger and better.

I was hoping he’d retire. He didn’t have a bad year but was missing when it counted the most and he’ll be a year older. 20 million a year for a #4 starter is to much.

Atlanta is exercising its $20 million option on right-hander Charlie Morton, sources tell ESPN. There was significant discussion within the organization about declining it, but ultimately the Braves decided to bring back Morton, who is beloved in Atlanta, for another season.

I expected Morton to be back, but I am a bit surprised it's for the whole $20M. I wonder is Yates was dumped to offset Morton's entire $20M.

Here is the current 2024 payroll with holes in LF, SP, and 2 spots on the bench (at least one being a CF-capable OFer):

Pos Player 2024 Salary 2024 Luxury
1 C Murphy $9.00 $12.20
2 1B Olson $22.00 $21.00
3 2B Albies $7.00 $5.00
4 3B Riley $21.00 $21.20
5 SS Arcia $2.00 $2.43
6 RF Acuna $17.00 $12.50
7 CF Harris $5.00 $9.00
8 LF FA $0.00 $0.00
9 DH Ozuna $16.00 $16.00

10 SP1 Fried $14.40 $14.40
11 SP2 Morton $20.00 $20.00
12 SP3 Strider $1.00 $12.50
13 SP4 Elder $0.70 $0.70
14 SP5 FA $0.00 $0.00

15 BN1 Lopez $3.90 $3.90
16 BN2 TDA $8.00 $8.00
17 BN3 OF $0.00 $0.00
18 BN4 UTIL $0.00 $0.00

19 BP1 Iglesias $16.00 $14.50
20 BP2 Lee $0.70 $0.70
21 BP3 Matzek $1.90 $1.55
22 BP4 Hernandez $0.70 $0.70
23 BP5 Minter $6.50 $6.50
24 BP6 Tonkin $1.00 $1.00
25 BP7 Jimenez $8.00 $8.67
26 BP8 Johnson $7.00 $7.10

Total $188.80 $199.55

Unless they have a big trade brewing, I don't see any reasonable way to improve much in LF. Everything I'm reading says the ChiSox are mistakenly attempting to contend in 2024, so Cease/Robert are not likely targets. I do think the correct use of Grissom's value is to get the best LFer or SP available from a team looking for a cheap 2-3 win option at 2B....someone like the Rays or Guardians.

I do expect AA to grab the best SP he can on a 3 year deal or less, and I expect that SP to not have a declined QO attached. MLBTR will be posting their Top 50 FAs article soon, so we can build our list of candidates from that.

Morton has been on basically the same deal the last 3 years. Interesting is the last two years they did a 1 and 1 (1 year and extent option). This time they only picked the option up rather offer him another option for about the same rate. Makes me think this is Charlie’s last season most likely.

Official: The #Braves today exercised the option on RHP Charlie Morton’s contract for the 2024 season, and declined options on RHP Collin McHugh, RHP Kirby Yates and OF Eddie Rosario.

I’m not surprised that the Braves brought him back, but after seeing him interviewed the night the division was clinched, I am a bit surprised he’s returning. I thought for sure he was retiring after that. But hey. Let’s see how it works out.

They just lost 101 games so if they think they can contend then they are seriously delusional.

Yes, they are, but that doesn't change the fact they aren't likely to be sellers. Their current GM was hired from within specifically because he's part of the bubble thinking that led to 101 losses.

Reinsdorf is a legendarily bad owner. How he’s managed the Bulls since 1998 should be a Harvard Business School case study.
