Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

They just added another 23.5 M to their payroll…compared to the billion they just blew it seems like nothing - but that’s a major chunk of change for what they are getting …

1. 211 strikeouts and a .305 OBP. 23.5M.
2. 0-0 0 IP (career). 30M X 12y
3. Projected 2024 stats: 0-0 0 IP. 70M X 10y
4. Career high 120 IP, 2023. 25M. +135M

I suppose if you make enough risky deals, some of them have to pan out, just by the law of averages. But I don’t really like any of them. I like our gambles way better than theirs. I really like the minimal ongoing money if ours don’t work out.

I know they are flush but those gambles have potentially crippling outcomes

I know they aren’t likely, but they exist.

Honestly, most of these moves the Dodgers scream of desperation. These are some pretty terrible value deals. Deals I would expect the Phillies, Mets, or the Angels to make.

I get that Ohtani basically pays for himself as long as he stays elite, but will his popularity be so high in 3-4 years when he's hitting .250 with 20 homers and a sub .850 OPS and no longer pitching? Also, paying 450 million to 2 extremely risky pitchers in Yamamato and Glasnow is pretty short sighted as well. Seems like they would have been better off signing Snell and Montgomery for 300 million while keeping Pepiot and DeLuca.

Maybe they see the window closing, and they're going all-in for a couple years

They’re old.
Betts 31
Freeman 34
Muncy 33
Hayward 34
CTaylor 33
Barnes 33
THernandez 31
MRojas 34

Pitching includes Yamamoto, Glasnow (emphasis on glass), no Ohtani in 24, Bobby Miller, Yarbrough, and TJ2 Buehler.

For me, that’s a lot of risk, a pretty weak roster after you get through Betts, Freeman, Smith and Outman. It’s a stars and scrubs approach that often doesn’t end well.

And they have Lux apparently (or Rojas) at SS, Muncy at 3B, Hernandez in LF, Heyward on the heavy side of a platoon in RF…and that’s the odds-on favorite to win the WS, huh?

This is the old school Yankees approach.

They held onto the studs for a long time and are trying to keep them competitive through heavy spending.

It may work out. May not.

You skipped Ohtani in your running through of the lineup…

Braves are WS favorites still though

I dont think he forgot Ohtani, just stating the Dodgers are an older team. He didnt add Will Smith in there either.

Hader, out of the kindness of his heart, should take a short term team friendly deal and come here to win a WS. Like maybe 6M (deferred until 2047) for one year with three years of team options.

That’s about equally as likely as that Dodgers lineup going 162 without a pile of injuries. Here’s looking at you Freeman and Muncy and Rojas and JHey….

Dru came up real fast so maybe a lot of them didn’t see him, and a lot of them weren’t in the business yet …. It’s been a minute since Clint Eastwood and co were scouting Jones

He had around 300 games played in the minors over about 2.75 years in the minors. Even older players like Griffey made the list. Even Pujols made the list and he had about a 1/3rd of the time in the minors. Andruw went through the minors in 96 like Godzilla going through Japan but before that he was moved rather conservatively. Had a full season at Low A Rome. I think Baseball America listed him as the best prospect of all time at one point.

I do remember he was the best prospect and we (Braves Country) were all super excited about it…..but so was Chipper and no sign of him anywhere either….

Yeah, I included Ohtani as crippled and useless as a pitcher, but I didn't include him as a DH, which does make their lineup five deep, until his injuries impact his hitting and he gets to .253/.312/.438 with 20 HRs. But he's good for now. The other half of their lineup is either scrubby or mix and match stuff. I mean, Chris Taylor, Austin Barnes and Mr. .192 Max Muncy are all going to have their moments, but it's amazing to me that a team with this kind of largesse has the roster they have. I much prefer spreading it around, as we've done.

Good thing they don't care about money, because they're going to waste a lot of it.

Poll of league executives on who is the best future closer and Hurston Waldrep comes in second. I know some people would not be happy with that outcome but given what elite closers are getting paid I wouldnt mind it.

Also a poll about who the best prospect they have ever seen and Andrus Jones is nowhere to be seen. Which is blasphemy.

It says "best amateur prospect", and considering none of them probably ever went to Curacao in the early 90s I doubt any of them saw him as an amateur.

The main issue I've seen with the Braves is a reluctance to move SP prospects to the BP. They seem to always cling to them staying SPs for years until all their value has been completely wasted. Hopefully they don't do it again with Waldrep if his ultimate role is in the BP.

Odd enough they do not really convert them very often even after they give up on them as starters.
