Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

If the Braves do let Rosario walk that has to mean they are prepared to spend some money right?
9 million wasn’t that bad of an option for a player of his caliber, maybe we will finally swing big either for a SP or OF.
One can hope I guess.
For once I feel like they are gonna go big since we got sent packing early again.

LF FA options don't look to be that expensive, so I don't know what's up there. I'm no Rosario guy, but he held up okay in this line-up. Regardless of what the analytics say, he's not a good OF (except for his arm), but maybe the Braves see the risk of a big decline in their second- and third-level analysis with the bat. He's certainly one of the more inconsistent players around and, having watched him up here in Minnesota for a number of years, has a remarkably low baseball IQ.

This is from an ESPN article predicting where the top free agents will sign. Passan has Nola to the Braves, so take that for what its worth, just a prediction. ....but he mentions that Mortons option has been declined....that hasn't been announced yet has it?

Passan: Atlanta Braves. Atlanta will prioritize starting pitching in free agency -- as it should, with Kyle Wright out for 2024 following shoulder surgery and Charlie Morton's team option declined. Adding Nola to a rotation with Spencer Strider and Max Fried would make for a 1-2-3 punch worthy of the Braves' lineup. Nola certainly fits what the Braves prioritize in starting pitchers: low walks, high strikeouts, lots of innings. And while his 2023 left plenty to be desired, his expected numbers weren't nearly as rough as his 4.46 ERA. Nola has never been a stuff guy, so in order for him to age gracefully, he'll have to rely on control and command. And going from a catcher with some of the worst framing numbers in baseball in J.T. Realmuto to a team with two elite framers in Sean Murphy and Travis d'Arnaud will only behoove him.

I can't see AA throwing 160+ million at Nola when Fried could probably be had for not that much much more.

Stroman, Gray, E-Rod, Montgomery, Giolito. That is the field we are looking at. I could also see us look at Wacha or Lugo on a short term deal with options to fill out the rotation.

I’m surprised that McHugh hasn’t been declined yet. Dude was terrible. Maybe AA hasn’t a bigger name for LF this year since it’s been a revolving door for years now.

I think Fried’s health plays into it along with him being a west coast guy. I’m sure they’ve offered him several extensions and he’s dead set on becoming a FA. We know by now what that widths with AA. Fried is a goner.

He's right though, Nola isn't as much of a health risk and Fried - Strider - Nola is a damn good 1-2-3. But man, I'd be shocked to see Morton not kept IF he's not retiring.

Morton getting hurt might have cost us game 3 and at his age going forward 20 million is a lot for a guy you’re depending on to start a playoff game.

I would have probably sent a AA reliever to Milwaukee for Canha. 11.5M for an OB machine wouldn't have hurt much.

Guardians hired Stephen Vogt as manager. Haven't heard Washingtons name specifically attached to any team in a while.

Both surprised and grateful for that.

I basically agree that Anthopoulos is probably going to let some of the big timber fall before making a move for starting pitching. I worry a bit that he might paint himself into a corner like he has a couple of other off-seasons, but there are a lot of guys out there who are: (1) good, and (2) probably won't be getting a five- or six-year deal. It's been his pattern not to go long-term on pitching deals, so I would be surprised if he deviated from that. I think a reliable #3 will suffice.

I thought the same thing when I saw he was traded to Detroit. Detroit front office must see something about their talent level that no one else in baseball sees because this deal makes sense if they see themselves as contenders, but they probably aren't so Canha doesn't really fit the window.
