Official Around Baseball 2023 Thread

This is being pushed by the Larry H. Miller family, former owners of the Utah Jazz. They are not afraid to put up big money to make projects happen.

They own land for a huge development in the suburbs called Daybreak, and have already announced that they will build a new stadium there for the Salt Lake Bees, minor league AAA affiliate of the Angels. The plan is for a stadium to be a centerpiece of the Daybreak development.

They tend to be very successful at making things happen in Utah.

I prefer this to any expansion in the south that would cut into the Braves market.

The Jazz have done well in Utah for decades but I’m skeptical that market could support a second pro sports team. On top of that, this would essentially be a second Coors Field scenario.

The Millers are good owners though. Larry was an exceptional steward for the Jazz and Gail did a great job after Larry died before she sold the Jazz to Ryan Smith. They wouldn’t be the wealthiest ownership group in baseball, but they would occasionally pay the NBA luxury tax during the Jazz competitive years.

Our OF situation may be worrisome right now but at least we don't have Pache starting for us like the Phillies do.

Don't see Salt Lake getting an MLB team.

I think Manfred wants Nashville or Charlotte because he wants the Braves market to be cut down. We basically have most of the Deep South as our TV market.

Manfred also appears deadset on Montreal. Whether that's Tampa moving if they dont' get a new stadium, or Montreal gets a new team.

He wants 32.

So room for two expansion teams. Or two expansion teams + Oakland & Tampa moving.

Expansion: Nashville or Charlotte + Portland
Oakland >> Las Vegas
Tampa >> Montreal

or

Tampa: New Stadium
Oakland >> Las Vegas
Expansion: Montreal + Charlotte/Nashville

Charlotte probably makes more sense than Nashville. Cardinals wouldn't be happy with Nashville being that close to their market. Charlotte would probably get all the Carolinas, and lower Virginia.

Portland I think could sustain an MLB team despite being really close to Seattle. They'd have to get a retractable roof like Seattle.

I personally would rather just see the Marlins being moved. Nobody goes to their games whether they're competitive or not. The WBC is the only time that stadium has been filled. Build a new stadium in actual Tampa proper, not St. Pete. Let the fans keep their team there. They can rep all of Florida. Baseball in Miami has proven for almost 30 years that nobody wants it there.

Baseball in Miami has been a train wreck from the start. It was never given a proper chance to succeed. They went from one abomination of a park to another. Plus Jeff Loria

New information about this. Dale Murphy and others who were previously involved in the effort to try to attract a team to the Portland area have left that group and joined the SLC group. Apparently this effectively ends the serious effort by Portland and makes the SLC proposal more attractive. Rocky Mountain Power owns a 100 acre property just west of the city that would be redeveloped into a sports park and complex.

Sounds like this is picking up steam and is better organized and planned than many are expecting.

It will suck to lose Murphy as a team ambassador. He’s been so active with the Braves since his retirement. I imagine he would focus his time and attention with this new club.
