Official Around Baseball 2023 Thread

Glen Kuiper is great and is by all accounts a stand up person with no history whatsoever of saying questionable things. It will be an absolute shame if he loses his job over an obvious word flub, but I suspect the villagers with pitch forks will demand it.

He flubbed a word which is really unfortunate. I know some will say that word shouldn’t even be in your head but it’s not like negro is a regularly used word either. Really a historical reference to something like the negro league is the only time you would use either and they are somewhat similar. No sane person who valued their job would say that on the air. He misspoke and it was as extremely unfortunate but some people need to put up the pitchforks.

Honestly, I have no tolerance for the word. Zero. Zilch. As a person of color, it’s abhorrent and beneath humanity.

That said, and I make no excuses for Glen, but I also do think context and a person’s heart do factor into something. I doubt the man was “excited” (per the museum’s director himself) to attend the Negro Leagues museum if he was truly a racist. To throw away a 20 year career over a flub seems too draconian, even if was a horrible, horrible flub.

Now if his friends come out and say the dude is racist and throws around the N-word in his spare time, cancel away. But I doubt that’s the case. There is a time and a place for the pitchforks - and for some I’m there in the front line myself - but this doesn’t seem to be one of those instances.

I bet his partner and production team almost stroked out. I wouldn't fire him over it, but damn... that's hard to defend

Thanks for sharing your perspective on this

Have “pitchforks” been brought out or is that just people inventing people to be pre-mad at?

Intent matters. He wasn’t disparaging anyone, calling anyone anything, or expressing blatantly bigoted views. I think he will be and should be fine.

He's been suspended while the A's investigate. But I agree, it was a mistake and not something that was done with intent or ill will behind it.

With todays climate, a suspension makes sense. Probably "sensitivity training" to say they are doing something. But I don't think he should lose his job over it. Quite a bit different than what the Reds announcer was caught saying on a hot mic.

Lol. Investigate what?
