Official Around Baseball 2023 Thread

A stat you love to see:

The Phillies have gone 10-4 this month and still lost a half a game to Atlanta in June.

I’m interested to see where the Phillies go from here. They seem to play well for two weeks and then terrible for the following. They need to go on another 10-4 stretch before I think it’s anything other than a decent stretch

We should know more about them in a week and a half from now. They have a series with Oakland, followed by Atlanta and the Mets.

I would probably agree, except the Braves broke the model. can you imagine what Vegas has planned for something like this. I would be willing to bet (see what I did there) that it will be way more than just a stadium.. I will be an attraction.

Solid. And I'm sure they will, and I'm actually a little fired up for it. I don't gamble much, don't whore or drink, so when I wind up in Vegas The Big Three are lost on me. So this will be a nice alternative.

When it comes to pretty much all social issues, I lean heavily on the side on individual liberties to respective tastes, but I have come to the conclusion that special "nights" should just be abadoned. If your church, youth group, polyamory group comes to the ballpark and want to be recognized, they just tell the ballpark foks and it can be noted with a quick announcement on the scoreboard between innings. I'm old and Met Stadium in Bloomington is now the site of the Mall of America, but they would run a set of "groups visiting" on the scoreboard between innings. Everything from church groups, Cub Scout troops, school safety patrols, Lions' Clubs, etc., would be recognized as being at the game.

Yeah, I'm very much in the for profit corporations should stay in their lane camp.

This should include camouflage uniforms celebrating troops, then.

The constant pandering to patriotism during sporting events has become almost comedic.

National anthem before the game, and a military flyover.

God bless America during the 7th inning stretch.

Have to salute some random soldier sitting in the first baseline special seats in the 5th inning just because.

Probably one of the few things I agree with sturg about, is the fact this patriotism pandering never ends. Since 9/11 it's almost mandatory.

Not sure the military is a social issue. Honoring those that served to allow us to live like we live is not really a 'social issue' .. deciding you want to be a different sex or running around collecting little pins to feel good about yourself are more social.. I mean, I guess you could say no pink bats or everyone wears 42 either.. some things are a bit bigger than others.

personally I don't care what teams do, it is usually done for a profit, not for a stance. I can agree with it or not.. doesn't mean I won't watch the game..

I will say I am not a fan of celebrating people who push the envelope of public vulgarity to obtain attention. I feel those fools have a wire loose and never developed the maturity gene to not act like a child because they crave attention... But whatever..

I can agree with this for the most part. I am not sure why we go over board with 'America is awesome' stuff.. especially in baseball. I thank military people I meet, but I don't think we need pre game celebrations, in game celebrations, post game celebrations.. I mean, I thank my kids teachers at the end of the year, but I don't want a song 'God bless teachers' sang before school everyday.

The military-industrial complex is as much a special interest group as any LGBTQ organization. If this is about (not) pandering to such groups, it’s equally fair game in this conversation.

But I agree, when large corporations make these moves, it’s driven by profit-motive, and returns to owners/shareholders, not great moral sensibilities—which is a big reason I think it’s silly in the first place. But, inasmuch as I care at all, the aggressive fawning over annoys me way more than Pride nights, personally.

I could also do without the weird jesus ads behind home plate. Why does he need an ad campaign. I know it’s a far right group trying to push their stuff but think it should be banned

Why should it be banned?? People pay for the ads. And if they have Pride night then they can have something about religion also.

The Mets have a real shot at being buried by the All-Star break. This is their schedule before then:

St. Louis, @Houston, @Philly, Milwaukee, San Francisco, @Arizona, @San Diego

“Something about religion” (???) is different than a weird jesus ad behind home plate every night. If you’re not at pride night you barely know it’s happening. Religion there all the time is off putting.

Besides the discussion is specifically about unneeded things.
