Official off-season trade rumor and suggestion thread

This huge deferral concert is brilliant btw. Who knows where baseball revenues are going to be in 10 years. I would have been all for doing a deal like this for Heyward or Upton.

The big unknown, at this point, is how the Nats will account for this. If they're simply putting the deferral $ in escrow each year between 2015 and 2021, then they'll be done budgeting for Scherzer after 7 years. Otherwise, this deferral will impact their spending capability long after Scherzer is gone. If the latter, that is a questionable decision . . . even if just from a PR standpoint.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how it goes as it could benefit us in the long term if we can rebuild in 4-5 years. Im not sure why they chose that route because Fister and Zimmermanns salary comes off the books next year and that is roughly 25 million per year so it pretty much matches what Scherzer got. It will be interesting if Rizzo explains why they chose this route.

True in theory. But, it banks on the TV deals still being outrageous for the next 10 years.

Why wouldn't they be? And even if they are just the same, the internet consumption market is driving professional sports revenues.

So Scherzer will be on their payroll for 7 years after the playing contract is up?
That's almost like current generations not caring about future generations in regards to global warming. We won't be around for it, who cares?

While that might be true it falls in line with what teams are paying position players this year which is around 8-9 million per WAR. We are paying a guy 11 million for likely worth just a little over 1 WAR.

As was mentioned earlier in this thread regarding free agents next year. There is a glut of pitching. Hitting? Not so much. That drives pitching contracts down and hitting contracts up.

I just don't see how you can compare position player WAR and pitching WAR...

you can have enough to justify not investing an additional $210M which has the potential to cripple you in as little as 3 years

How on earth does this "cripple" them???

Zimmerman comes off the books following this season - $16,500,000 this year.
Fister comes off the books following this season - $11,400,000 this year.
Desmond comes off the books following this season - $11,000,000 this year.
Span comes off the books following this season - $9,000,000 this year.

Structuring the deal the way they did added $15,000,000 to their present payroll, and they saved $2,300,000 of that by swapping Clippard's projected salary for Escobar.

Not exactly. Revenues are continuously going up each year. 15 million in the future could be the equivalent of what we would look at 10 million. And, if the Nats continue to be good then their revenues will further increase. I think its a smart move personally. Max is a hell of a good pitcher.

If Nats trade Zimmermann, it will be quite interesting to compare the return they get versus the return we got for Upton. Both Zimmerman and Upton are approximately 3 WAR rentals owed a lot of money ($14.5m for JU, $16.5m for JZ).

Sure, he is.
But that's still $15MM that will be on their payroll for 7 years after he's no long on the team.
It's likely very good for the current regime, because what are the chances they're there for 14 years?

Using the fangraphs numbers, 15 million is like $9.4 million.

2016- Just arby guys
2017- Werth (21.57)

Getting interesting . . .

@JPerrotto: Hearing #Nats RHP Stephen Strasburg is very much available and both sides believe it is time to move on. #MLB

Wow, interesting. So he's almost definitely gone. Hasn't lived up to that ace potential he had, but on name alone he will garner a lot in return.

I'd have to see more info, but why would he agree to this? His other offers must not have been close.

Some people just are dumb with money and would rather have the annual income. (similar to people winning lottery and taking yearly payout) Not sure if that's the case, but it appears to be so.

If I'm a player, I'd much rather take the frontloaded contract of Lester than the backloaded contract of Scherzer. In 7 years, Lester will have 50 million dollars more than Scherzer has. If Lester would take the difference of 7+ million per year over the next 7 years (additional money he will have) and grow it 5% and its $58,000,000 that money would grow to in 7 years. Using 7%, it would be $62,000,000.

He would be the person that would get the most value in return, but they would certainly have to sign either Zimmermann or Fister.
