Official official offseason thread

That's all well and good, but giving up all that to (thethe's) point..get marginally better is interesting. I'm not like most of the people who don't think Contreras can be a better catcher. We know he'll hit. Seems steep, and I'm saying it as a fan of Murphy.

in what way is Murphy only a “marginal” upgrade? he’s a stud.

Remember AA said last week that we weren’t in on Murphy and a week later we just got him. I won’t be surprised at anything at this point.

Now that this trade has gone down, Vazquez is apparently near a deal. Still a handful of teams looking for a catcher. Even more reason why it would have made sense to hold onto Contreras to get something from one of those teams or even traded TDA to get something while giving Contreras DH.

TDA is the clubhouse guy since Freddie left.

Certainly not, but "upgrading" from TDA/Pina/Contreras at C/DH to Murphy/TDA/Ozuna at C/DH (is that even an overall upgrade?) seems like it wasn't worth Contreras AND Pina in a market starved for catchers...meanwhile LF/DH/SS are all dumpster fires.

i have to think AA saw a way to acquire a stud without paying him a **** ton of money and went for it. i think there are more moves planned.

plus i bet a lot of teams don’t view WC as a real catcher, the Braves included.

Comprehend. Not the catcher. I've said that. The point was subtraction..cool. A catcher, however good was not this teams Achilles.

Murphy is still young, just turned 28, curious if we try to extend him, what kind of years we would do. TDA is getting older and has had alot of injuries, so it's a long-term move, moving some non-elite pieces. AA will make another move, this isnt the last move we'll make this winter.

Murphy's numbers away from Oakland are really good, and he's fantastic defensively. I question using our trade chips on a catcher but it makes the team better.

This isn’t the last move AA is gonna make. Adding a top 3 at his position player is always a good thing. Contreras doesn’t really have a position outside of DH here so AA cashed a chip in.

Yeah, people thinking this is our last move is wishful thinking. Clearly AA has other moves planned (moved 3 spots on the 40). Said at the Winter Meetings, we planned to have all 3 of TDA, WC, and Pina on the team. Well...

Yeah, I don't get the angst. We got better at catcher and pitching today. AA can still address the spots everyone talks about.

I'm not sure about SS unless it's Correa/Swanson. Plenty of outfielders left on the market though.

if you’re forced to do it, tda at dh + murphy at C >>>> tda at C and WC at DH. you lose depth though trading Pina

Save money and gain a roster spot as well. We didnt have any room with Pina.

Oakland is the one team to the quantity over quality. No surprise AA used a bunch of meh guys to help get him.

While true, they could have flipped Bill for a better return than Ruiz though. They didn't get quantity or quality in the regard.

I suspect if Ozuna was still an .800+ OPS DH and AA signed Swanson to an extension, none of us would be concerned about converting Contreras and Pina into Murphy. In fact, I imagine we'd all be pretty stoked about the move. But that isn't reality, and the context of the current reality is important. Using the most valuable trade chip AA has to upgrade from 5 wins at C/DH to 6 wins at C/DH (because he downgraded at DH) while still leaving LF/SS unaddressed and not freeing up any payroll is a headscratcher.

I suspect everyone is right and AA will address LF/SS/DH somehow in the coming weeks. Absent that information about the future, I'm still scratching my head about this trade in the same why I did when the Jiminez trade dropped.

Murphy makes us a lot better going forward imo. He’s gonna be the heir to C with TDA getting older. I could see AA extending him next offseason. If we could add Correa man we would have the best offense in baseball.
