Olivera traded for Kemp

Shh, don't get them all riled up again. We just got them settled down and the foam wiped from their mouths.

Ignorance is bliss, and right now they are all blissful and quiet.

So, you're correct because of a two sentence answer from a weekly chat that the author gave maybe ten seconds of thought?

and you are the most enlightened internet message board poster i've seen yet.

I just have a much better understanding about statistical analysis than you. It's OK you can't comprehend the numbers side of things. I'm sure you have other talents.

I promise you he thought more about it than that. He (and everyone with a background in data analysis) has known that answer for years.

It only took him 10 seconds to type it out, probably for the 100th time answering the same stupid question from the same stupid people.

Uhhhh.. I have a background in data analysis. I studied machine learning and operations research. Cameron has a bachelors in economics from UNC-Greensboro. He may know baseball, but he's not exactly well grounded in formal statistics training.

Aside from that diatribe, itt would be awesome if you wouldn't hide behind statistics when your opinion is very clearly not based on anything related to statistics.

That's cute. Since we are comparing brain pans....

I played D1 college baseball. I have a physics degree and a computer science degree. I have taught every single undergraduate level math course, including statistical analysis and applied mathematics. I have spent the last 10 years as a software engineer earning well into the six figures writing mathematical analysis tools for the largest gaming company on the planet, tools that are used by mathematicians and game designers to build the math behind wager games. I don't use these tools to analyze data, I write them.

I can promise you, with 100% certainty, that I'm right when I talk about how stats relate to baseball.

I know it makes most of you mad to be told you are wrong. It's fine and perfectly normal to react that way. Doesn't make you any less wrong though.

Dave Cameron is right. Inciarte isn't going to "cover up" for Kemp's bad defense by much, or make him any better. You can argue and cry about it all you want. That's what message boards are for, but you are still wrong.

That's awesome. I also wasn't the one making the assumption that others are statistically illiterate. I'm surprised that you would be that absolute in your opinion without looking at any data given your impressive background that should have taught you not to assume.

I'm sure you do understand them. What statistical evidence do you have that there is no relationship between CF and corner outfield defense?

Yup and I can find people that claim that vaccines cause autism, but where's the evidence?

I'm eagerly anticipating the support for your claim.

Between the gym comments and now this you have me dying over here :) Are you also a French Model?

A lot of absolute in this post, especially if you understand statistics as well as you claim. They are not absolute, nor do they claim to be, but you regularly make declarations of fact based on them.

Enscheff, in all seriousness, I've got, like, advanced degrees and all that but I'm not a French model, didn't play D1, nor do I have a nuclear physics degree. But I have this nagging feeling that I can't shake that the UZR/DRS stats overvalue the impact of defense, much to the annoyance of Giles and others.

I've glombed onto the Inside Edge stats in Fangraphs to make my point. Of course, they look at all the chances fielders get and divvy them up according to difficulty (I'm sure there are better ways to do it) but what strikes me, especially with outfielders, is that there just aren't that many non-routine plays to be made to impact runs and wins to the extent that the two WAR methodologies say they do.

The whole Matt Kemp thing on the other thread is a good example. Looks to me like he makes all the routine plays, 3/4 of the likely plays and 36% of the 50/50 plays, which means there aren't many plays he should have made and didn't, and that there just weren't that many balls hit in his vicinity to where he could make more than a few runs difference from an average (or even above average) fielder.

In a few sentences, and without condescension, since we've all agreed that we're all smart, athletic and extremely good-looking, can you help me understand why the defensive element of WAR isn't wildly inaccurate and overweighted, as I feel that it is?

Kemp has graded as negative 6 runs this year, 15 last year and 22 the year before. His baserunning has cost several runs. When you consider his offense have been roughly 9 runs above a replacement level player this year, you can see how detrimental bad defense can be to a non very good hitter.

He must be progressively getting better defenders next to him.

Padres are releasing Olivera.

And the Braves are 6-2 with Kemp. Say what you want about Kemps defense or on base skills. When he is in the line up, it makes us a better team. Markakis can be in more of a low pressure production role instead of being relied upon to get the big hit. Freeman gets more pitches to hit because Kemp has the power to do real damage.....i like the move going forward.
