I was thinking 60+, which i got pretty easily.

Based on this year alone or the last 3? Seems everyone down on Wood think what he's done this year is his true talent level and expect that going into the future. I guess we should expect Julio to be a 4+ ERA guy here on out too.

I'm not personally sure what to expect of either of them going forward. What I am sure of is that Pitchers with fastballs that top out at 92 who have trouble locating get hit - and hit pretty hard - especially when they can't consistently throw their offspeed pitches for strikes. The zone did seem to be pretty tight for Julio yesterday IMO, but Eovaldi dealt with the same Umpire and didn't give up three two-out bombs. I thought yesterday was Wood's best outing (by far) since the trade - and maybe all season - he just got outpitched. Alex has only given up 11 bombs this season (which falls in line with his previous numbers), but Julio's already given up more than twice that many (a career-high) with 6-8 starts left. Both guys have really struggled to show any kind of consistency this season, and that's pretty alarming if you are/were counting on them to be your #2/#3 SPs.

Is this actually "who they are" going forward? Who knows? I do think it accentuates the point (in hindsight obviously) that bringing J-Up, Heyward, and Gattis back to try to "make another run" would've been a bad idea - down seasons from Julio and Alex (at the top of the rotation) combined with the other questionable options wouldn't have made that group much other than a candidate to be a little bit more of a contender for the wildcard and an almost sure one-and-done entry if they'd have gotten there.

Something I think it shows even more is the need to go get one of the "Aces" this winter. If what we've gotten from Miller is relatively close to "who he is", and Julio is able to make some adjustments and get back to close to what we've come to expect in the past, I still won't argue with those who say we probably don't have that true "horse" to get it done in the end (without a TON of offense). At their best, Shelby and Teheran don't scare you if you're running Kershaw and Greinke, Scherzer and Zimmerman, or Lester and Arrieta out there against them.

Wood throws a 2 seamer; aka a sinker. I'm not sure why people want to knock him for not throwing 95 (which guys with 4 seamers throw)

I might be new to the board, but from what I see anyone we trade away is a future hall of famer, and we should fleece teams for it to be worth it.

While we're paying Olivera to struggle to hit pitchers who could be his grandkids, Wood is at least getting major league hitters out.

Had a nice start yesterday anyway

Well there you go. That's enough for me to make a decision on the trade :)

With the season gone, I'm looking forward to seeing Olivera. I may have to run home and DVR this game before little league.

if these people don't have anything negative to say, they get upset.... going to be a long winter for them if they have nothing to cry about..

I think there's a pretty admirable diversity of opinion, actually.

Sorry, but that's not what typically happens. What we see is a player is traded away and he's instantly "not that good" saw it with Jason, Justin, Gattis, and now Wood. Even if the players were really good for us, or even if they're good ofr thier new team, it doesn't matter.

As far as this trade goes it's been discussed ad nauseum. We traded one of the 40 best starting pitchers over the last 3 years for a 30 year old with 0 MLB PA. Odds of us looking good coming out of this trade aren't high. Now it can happen. Wood could go nuclear ala Beachy or Medlen, or Olivera could be better than advertised. But this trade left a sour taste in most people on this boards mouth for a reason. And when people say that wood is a 4-5 type then of course people are gonna jump their ****. Especially when wood was our only resemblance of good pitching aside from Miller this year.

That's a good summary of my thoughts on the trade as well. Nicely said, zeets.

I guess I'm more in the middle then. I think all of those players are good, but I also see how they didn't fit into our plans or that we sold high on them. Add Peraza to that as well. I like him, but I think we sold high on him as well.

At what point did I say he didn't?

"What I am sure of is that Pitchers with fastballs that top out at 92 who have trouble locating get hit - and hit pretty hard - especially when they can't consistently throw their offspeed pitches for strikes."

"I thought yesterday was Wood's best outing (by far) since the trade - and maybe all season - he just got outpitched. Alex has only given up 11 bombs this season (which falls in line with his previous numbers),..."

Why does mentioning that his fastball tops out at 92 become "knocking him"? Huddy was very good for a long time throwing like that - when he had movement and could use his breaking ball to keep hitters off the sinker. Teheran and Wood can be too - the fact that they don't have plus-velocity doesn't make them bad Pitchers, it just gives them one less weapon than some. If they're not locating well, they tend to get hit hard.

Because he throws his 4 seamer than 92, but rarely, if ever throws it anymore.
