Pete Rose

Pete Rose should be allowed in the HOF for his accomplishments as a player, but I have much doubt that he would be elected if eligible anyway. He shouldn't be allowed to be a part of baseball going forward in any way because of his gambling.

He should be in the HOF, but I think if elected and the money he will receive will have him gamble it.

This is the only issue I have.

"Rose, who holds more records than any other player in the history of major league baseball, became the first person banned from the game since 1943."

Did you put that in bold to highlight the fact that it doesn't make any sense? So you are worried that he will use his HOF money to gamble? Who cares what a 75 year old does with his money. I believe he's free to gamble on anything, including baseball, now that he isn't connected to any team.

Sorry if I am being a butt hole, but I get tired of people of calling me Carlton Banks and yet when I defend my people, I get slammed. I know Gilesfan is not racist per se, but his comment kind of put me away with the stories of what Cobb did intentionally to blacks. Yes, he hated everyone but really hated my race. Just imagine him and Gibson on the same team, now that would scary.

It's quite all right. Gilesfan was the first on my ignore list at Scout and has been there ever since. The problem was that he represented the "new brand of Braves fan" - had internet access and had to be abrasive and obnoxious over the least little thing. Nothing else new under the Sun.

Yes and yes. He agreed to a ban (whether one would have been imposed anyway or not) with him understanding that he would still be eligible for the HoF, but almost as soon as the ink was dry on his signature he was removed from the ballot. I don't mind him being banned from managing, coaching or participating in any on-field activities, but he should have been on the Hall ballot long ago.

Even if he became eligible for the ballot, he would never receive the 75% necessary for induction. Look at what happened to Bonds and McGuire. Does anybody seriously believe that the BBWAA would treat Pete Rose any differently?

You'll never convince me that Rose and Giamatti didn't have a deal worked out similar to what you just posted. Giamatti died, Vincent didn't honor the deal and the whole thing went to hell.

I never cared for Pete Rose, but when I finally get to take my son to the Hall of Fame I'd like to be able to show him the guy I've told him about whose hitting streak I got to watch end in person.

Giamatti's heart probably wasn't in the best condition, but the timing of his death gave the perception that the whole ordeal helped kill him.

Wasn't Gene Garber the reliever to end that game? Maybe Larry McWilliams starter? Memory's fuzzier on the latter.

You're correct. McWilliams started and Garber closed. Rose's last time up Geno didn't throw anything within six inches of the plate.

MLB is a joke. Picking a choosing when they want to enforce the rules. They swept steroids under the rug because it saved the game of baseball and brought tons of money to baseball...they can't profit off of gambling so they claim it jeopardizes the integrity of baseball. Yea maybe back in the early 20th century when owners treated players like whores and paid them sh*t. The dude bet ON HIS team to win. Lmao. Let him in and offer him an apology. 27 years is long enough. Jesus Christ.

Rose owns the most records cause he played forever. Was hardly a true all-time great.

Of 1B qualified players with at least 9000 PA, He's 20th in wRC+ hardly anything amazing. Hall worthy for sure, but it's not like we're keeping out Barry Bonds or anything like tha.t

I'm not saying he would sail in with 90% of the ballots. He may fall off after one year, but he deserves the same chance at induction that Ken Camintti and others with much worse credentials had.

Someone brought up the 44-game hitting streak and it got me to thinking and I found this quote from an article on ESPN Classic, which I think pretty much sums of what a bag of d*cks Pete Rose is:

As for the strikeout (that ended the streak), Rose sounds like sour grapes when he says, "I was a little surprised that in a game that was 16-4, he [Garber] pitched me like it was the seventh game of the World Series. I guess he thought it was Joe DiMaggio up there."

That kind of quote coming from a guy who greased a basically defenseless Ray Fosse in a glorified exhibition game just about says it all.

After today's news this seems like a fitting bump.

He's not getting in and nor should he ever. I have no doubt he bet against himself at some point too. Just waiting for that to come out eventually.

I don't care how good one is, the rules are what the rules are. The fact that he bet on his own team--and I don't care if he bet on them to win or not--just demolishes any notion that he had respect for the integrity of the game.

Rose tried to bunt while down 12 runs, why shouldn't Garber pitch the way he did?

I wish there was a way that Pete could be recognized for his contributions to the game as a player without the fanfare/prestige of allowing him into the HOF.
