Playoff Roster

If this was a month ago and we had a healthy Avilan, Downs, and Walden, I'd feel a lot better about the 6th inning on. But do you really still feel comfortable with what we've seen lately?

Yeah. Avilan and Woods will be used mainly against their three lefties (Crawford, Gonzalez, Schumacher). They won't be asked to do much more. Carpenter will probably get the 8th. Ayala and Walden will fill in as needed. I think Carpenter is the key guy. He will probably be asked to play the role Walden would have if he wasn't rusty. And I like what I've seen out of him.

He's salivating at the prospect of some big ABs.

Makes sense. Just the thought of Walden coming in during any key situation makes me extremely nervous at this point. Even Avilan to some extent. Just looked it up, and lefties only hit .144 against Avilan this year. He was forced into facing both sides out of necessity and he was super dominant.

If EOF or Venters were not injured Fredi probably only lets Medlen pitch 4 innings 5 at most.

Actually, rumor has it that Fredi wanted Hale to bring in for Meds not Garcia. He trusts Garcia just fine because he's got a lot of "experience" the rest of our staff lacks. :icon_biggrin:

Still really don't understand Reed J being on there. He has no hits since coming back and very few at bats.

He and Laird are what we have on the bench as pinch hitters against LHP. Unless you want to count BJ and Janish. Btw both Reed and Laird have had some success against Kershaw. Something to keep in mind if the seventh inning rolls around and we're still in the game.

Reed is 1-3 vs. Kershaw and Laird is 1-2. I still think Uggla would have just as much a chance as Reed. But I wish Uggla just wasn't so damn awful. One extra base hit since July 30.

Its hard to feel bad for Uggla when hes been awful the whole year. Dan is one of my favorite players and its a shame we havent seen the Uggla from Florida yet and probably never will. I thought we would put him on the roster bc Janish sucks, but at the least, Janish will play excellent defense in replacement of CJ in the late innings.

If I were Dan, id look at this as a wake up call.

It is not a question of a wake up call. Everything I've heard is that Uggla has worked very hard to find his old form. He just simply is not the player he once was. Happens to everyone, but the timetable varies from player to player. It in no way reflects upon his character or work ethic.

I think Dan's trying but I think sometimes you just lose it. I feel bad for him in that he had all those seasons with the Marlins and no doubt wanted to more opportunities to play in the playoffs and stuff. At the same time, this is a business and is about putting the best players out there to give you a chance to win.

I don't really understand the inclusion of Constanza on the roster, you have Schafer, so you don't necessarily need Constanza. They must believe Constanza would be more valuable as a late inning pinch runner, than say Joey T would be as a switch hitter. Not that Joey T made a great case for himself with his finish down the stretch.

Surprisingly bold roster moves by Fredi and the Braves. Hale has pitched in what, two games? Is he a potential 4th game starter? Costanza has gotten little use and was only on the team when the rosters expanded and maybe a week or so in the other 5 months.

A lot of guys who can run coming off the bench. And we're commited to Elliot Johnson as the everyday 2b. Wood is obviously a key part of the plan to have left off Downs.

Like I said, bold. Will it carry over to game strategy? We're underdogs, hope we play bold.

I think it makes sense to have two left handed bats on the bench (Schafer and Constanza), especially when you consider the Dodgers use three righties (Jansen, Wilson, Belisario) as their preferred high leverage relievers.

The choice came down to Constanza and Joey T. I think they made the right choice.

If Uggla has fallen this far out of favor with his manager why did he get so much playing time while we were trying to win the best record in the league? Is FG admitting he didn't have his best on the field for the last month of the season?

It's been reported that Freddie Garcia will start game 4 if it gets that far...don't know if that's true, but that's what's floating out there.

Fredi was saying less than a week ago that Uggla would be on the roster. I suspect Fredi was not the prime mover behind the decision to leave Uggla off.

Exactly. AJC: "Gonzalez had said on Friday that he expected Uggla and Upton, who also had a career-worst season, to make the division series roster “unless something crazy happens.” Upton is on the roster."

Apparently something "crazy" happened.
