Playoff Roster

It's been reported that Freddie Garcia will start game 4 if it gets that far.

I do not like this; but I suppose it's what must be foisted upon us, what with the team – unwisely, in my opinion – shifting Wood from the rotation earlier this month.

Is Schafer considered a bat as well?

I would've plugged Uggla in the roster over Constanza or Schafer.

Schafer and Constanza provide the same thing with Schafer being able to play outfield better and provide more speed. We have BJ already. And Reed Johnson.

With Avilan the only lefty, Wood going to pen makes more sense than Maholm. Downs has been a downer lately since his injury.

We need the lefties for Crawford and A-Gon. Wood is a guy I'd trust taking down both of them.

Im still going back and forth on this Uggla decision. Hes been crap, but the Dodgers will throw Kershaw and Ryu at us, and although he has been crap, it would have been nice to have Ugglas bat in the lineup. In a 0-0 game, Dan has the potential to put us up with one swing of the bat. On the other hand, bases loaded down 1 with 1 out, we dont need Dan up there K'ing as usual.

Then comes BJ Upton. Why keep BJ, but not Dan? Both have sucked. I guess you could use BJ for his speed, but thats what Schafer and Constanza can provide.

Anyways, im pumped for tonight. I hope Gattis plays LF and is in the cleanup spot. Something tells me hes about to have a huge series.

You have to give more weight to performance in the last month or two in making these decisions. Even so, going with Janish over Uggla is a close call.

Having thought this over some, I think the more controversial decision was to leave off Downs. He also struggled down the stretch. But I think some of this involved bad luck of the BABIP variety. Having two lefties will reduce Fredi's ability to maneuver for the platoon advantage.

I think going with Constanza or Reed Johnson over Uggla is a legitimate question and I simply cannot stand Uggla. There's a real redundancy with all of the OF reserves.

I think the idea is to have two lefty pinch hitters (Constanza and Schafer) and two righty pinch hitters (Laird and Reed). At this point BJ is there as a defensive replacement/pinch runner. We have three potential pinch runners (Constanza, Schafer, BJ). I think in their analysis of the series, the Braves brass concluded that they would have to manufacture some runs against this Dodgers' staff and that most of the games would be close. Hence the overload with respect to potential pinch runners and defensive replacements. In a one-run game, any of Gattis, McCann, Chris Johnson could be pinch run for. If Laird or Reed gets on base, we might burn a pinch runner there too.

I think the big surprise in this series will be our aggressive baserunning. We didn't do it all year. But at the very end against the Phillies we did a lot of running. The roster construction and how we ran in the Phillies series point in the same direction. I think this makes sense as a strategy given the quality of the Dodgers staff. Btw their bullpen is very good too, now that Brandon League is no longer being featured.

Yeah, I agree that this must be the rationale . . . loading up for small ball. Whether or not that is wise is another story.

I'm already having the visions of the blown calls on stolen bases that will inevitably decide the series.
