Playoff Roster

Fredi was saying less than a week ago that Uggla would be on the roster. I suspect Fredi was not the prime mover behind the decision to leave Uggla off.
Agreed and further enhances my opinion that we have seen the last of Uggla in a Braves uniform.

They probably had a chat with Uggla and told him he'd be on the playoff roster but not as a starter, then Dan said "F---" then walked back to the locker room like he walks back to the dugout on a strikeout.

Mind blown, Fredi decides it's better to just take him off altogether.

Exactly. AJC: "Gonzalez had said on Friday that he expected Uggla and Upton, who also had a career-worst season, to make the division series roster “unless something crazy happens.” Upton is on the roster."

Apparently something "crazy" happened.

Frank Wren gave him the week off so he could get as big as a house.

Varvaro? What happened there?

My thoughts too. We'll probably do whatever we can to move as much of his contract left. Then if needed trade his bad contract for another bad contract. It's a lot easier to move a bad contract when taking one back in the trade.

In 2010, Bruch Bochy left Barry Zito off the World Series roster. Two years later, Zito beat Verlander to help the Giants win the World Series. These guys are pros. Sure their feelings get hurt when they are left off the roster like this. But they can set it aside once it is done. My guess is Uggla, Maholm, Downs, Varvaro are all going to spend the next week staying as sharp as possible in case they are needed later.

While true and a good point. I still see Wren doing all he can to trade Uggla this off-season.

Varvaro was far from a lock. Fredi mostly used him when the team was behind or he needed to save the rest of the pen. He was the seventh man in a seven man bullpen. Hale is a better pitcher imo and can give the team 4 or 5 innings if needed. The Braves saw it the same way.

I think also the way Hale pitched in his first start was important. He showed an ability to control his emotions and be effective in circumstances when he should have been amped up. Not quite the same as a playoff atmosphere, but still a useful indicator of his ability to deal with pressure.

That and Ayala is seen as someone who can get a ground ball. With all that in mind, Avilan/Carpenter/Wood/Walden are the main ones who are gonna have to get it done leading to Kimbrel.

I agree about Hale, but I'd take either Downs or Varvaro over Ayala. I still say Downs issues likely were due to a combination of injury, usage and some fluke hits too.

Wait just a second here. Do you really expect me to believe Barry Zito and the offensively challenged Giants beat Justin Verlander? Thats unpossible.

Downs not being on the roster is much more surprising than Varvaro not being on it. I would have wanted 3 lefties to maximize the platoon advantage. But Walden has reverse splits.

I think there were two distinct decisions being made on the pen. One was Walden versus Downs, and that apparently turned on Walden being able to show them he was healthy.

The second decision was between Hale, Varvaro and Maholm. I think they wanted a second potential long man besides Wood. My guess is that with just two lefties they play to use Wood a lot in short stints. Hale really is more versatile and has pitched better of late than the other two. Still a bit of a surprise they went to him. I think it is the right call.

While it is true, Zito's stats, record, horoscope or what ever are all aberrations. With his numbers there is no sane explanation for his record last year. Possibly the only year he was actually worth what he was paid.
