¿Qué decisión tomar con respecto a Peráza?

Not sure how Smith and Albies compare to Revere, as they both take a lot of walks and Smith has more power (Albies has a good shot of hitting for more, too).

It is true that Smith walks more than Revere. That's a plus. But he strikes out more. When you strike out more you need to compensate with walks, a higher BABIP or some power. In the case of Smith versus Revere, the higher walk rate compensates for the higher strikeout rate.

With respect to Albies, I agree he has a better chance of developing more power. But I'd say his projection as a hitter is still closer to Revere than Altuve. There's a small (I'd say 5-10%) chance he could be better than Altuve. That's what makes him such an exciting prospect.

Yes, good point and why they typically grade out higher.

I think it's interesting to look at body types though. You see a guy like Correa, who is awfully skinny, but you know he's going to fill out like Arod (minus roids, of course)

Mallex Smtih is 5-9 170. Jose Peraza is 6-0 180. Albies is 5-9 150. I don't know that any of them fill out to even what Jace is right now, a pretty thick 6-0 200.

Albies looks tiny in the upper body and a bit more stocky lower body. I'd guess he has the best chance to get significantly stronger. I wonder what Juan Uribe looked like at 17.

A note on Revere to keep in mind. He hit .326/.383/.404 in his minor league career compared to .289/.323/.341 in his major league career.

Standard 10% haircut rule seems to apply in his case. That's what I always do as a quick and dirty way of going from AAA to the majors. With the caveat that younger players will continue to improve some. I don't expect Peraza to light up the majors this year or next. But over the 2017-2020 period he has a good chance to be an above average regular.

You mean before sirens went off when he entered an Old Country Buffet?

I do think Peraza is a better prospect than Trea Turner.

Albies, Peraza, and Peterson all seem to be similar guys. I don't think it's homer talk to think a team could see any of them as the SS of the future. If that's the case, we could get a big return. I wouldn't trade them just to do it, but if someone answered a question for me at 3B, LF, CF, C then I'd do it.

I'm not sold on Peterson. I'm not sold on the idea that it's good to have a 2B and LF with OBP higher than slugging.

And Peraza's value is mostly in his defense, so I don't get the move to OF. Smith seems to be similar player with actual OF experience and has the adv of batting on the left side to use his speed.

I'm more excited about D Peterson who actually hits an extra base hit with some regularity.

I think that's where the disconnect is from the posibraves and negabraves. The posibraves tell us "WE HAVE SO MANY IMPACT BATS IN THE MINORS" whereas the negabraves see it as completely redundant players and absent of any true power...

I guess I'm some sort of hybrid who says redundancy isn't a bad thing (I call it depth) and we can win without adding power. We will need the young arms to develop and enough of them to stay healthy. But we have a more than decent core to build around in the majors (Freeman, Simmons, Peterson, Teheran, Wood, Miller, Folty).

The pitching is fine (it better be after we sold off all our assets for it).

But offense will be a problem in my opinion. Markakis may never hit a home run. Peterson won't hit them. Simmons won't hit them. Bethancourt won't hit them. Peraza won't hit them. Smith won't hit them. And where the heck is everyone gonna play?

Oh... so similar numbers to Mallex Smith? Crazy!

Mallex pretty clearly has more power and walks a lot more though (while striking out a good bit more, of course). Sort of similar, sure, but Mallex also continues to improve.

I didn't know Ben had those kind of numbers though. But he has legit little league power. Mallex is far from a power guy but definitely has more pop than Revere.

I just think this actual on-field could look a lot different in a couple of years (even next year). Moves will be made and someone will likely be signed. I definitely think there is a lot to be excited about in the minors right now. Our potential power guys are further away than our lighter hitters definitely.

Offense hasn't been a problem this year. Not one bit.

It's been at least a little problem, IMO.
We really need a competent catcher. I'm beginning to board the "anything for Lucroy" train.
It's hard to say we don't need more power. I definitely think we do.
I still actually think the offense could get better this year though.

You put an average pen on this teamand they are in first place.

They are consistently scoring 4+ runs a game. I don't see an issue right now with the offense. Of course you never want to sit on your laurels and want continuous improvement but offense is not my concern right now. We need some damn bullpen arms.

I find it interesting that all of us are stat book scouting these players.

I am a huge Peraza fan. He may not walk, but he's got a plus plus contact skill and KLaw said that most scouts he talks to throw a 70 on his defense. Obviously he is a 70-80 runner.

I like Mallex and I can buy that he could be a good major leaguer, but he has been doing what he's done this year for his whole minor league career and he hasn't caught much attention. I'm also really concerned with the universal assessment that he's below average defensively. If he can't handle CF then he's going to have to BABIP the hell out of the ball to be a good LF.

I didn't mind moving Peraza to CF. If his defense translates to an equivalent of 70 there then he's going to be immensely valuable. Juan Lagares just got 40 million for being a defense first CF. If Peraza can play elite defense in center and hit around .300 with 40 steals we have an easy 3-4 WAR player on our hands. The same holds true if he sticks at 2B (Dee Gordon has shown this year that that exact skill set is valuable at that position).

I know Jace is an older-ish rookie, but he's still just a rookie who's making adjustments. He's been improving every month, with April his only poor month. He was really good in May and has been even better in the SSS of June.
