REAL FOOTBALL Thread

I mean I won't write Smith off because of who his dad is. But I'm getting to the point at what point do you have to can him?

Let's say year 1 is a bit of a wash because it was the end of what should have been the championship era. Let's say year 2 was a wash because we were in cap hell. But should year 3 be considered a wash when we've had 3 top 10 picks in a row? IMO it shouldn't. We should be taking big steps forward by now.

Year 4 has to be the last year. If we're not a contender, then start over. It's the NFL you can rebuild pretty damned quickly (look at the Lions) with good front office moves and the right coach.

I'm not going to condemn him for who his father is but he absolutely has the whiny, entitled thing down. It's off-putting.

I'm generally for giving a head coach 3 years and then evaluate. You don't have to be at the end product after 3 years, but you need to show that your system is in place and working and that you have the building blocks necessary.

Smith is struggling to show he's in control of the team, he's struggling with rookie head coach mistakes, he has yet to get a QB or an Edge in place (two of the three most important positions on the field), and the offense, the thing he was brought in for, has been pedestrian at best.

There's no sign Smith's system is in place and working and Smith is still looking for building blocks. Even if the Falcons win the NFC South, it's not enough for me. Winning a terrible division isn't an achievement. The Falcons are Smith's team now and they're a mess. Smith shouldn't survive Black Monday.

What edge player was available that we could have gotten?

Also what qb?

Micah Parsons was there when they took a TE. So was Justin Fields. Not saying they should have taken Fields but I do think he'd have done far better in Atlanta, learning under Ryan, than in Chicago.

If you're in a rebuild, you don't draft a TE. You trade down.

As I understand, no one wanted to trade up with all the QBs going 1,2,3

Also the rumor was the Falcons were going to take Lance at 4 if he was there.

Doesn't matter. In the top 5 you should really only ever target QB, OT, DT, and Edge. Occasionally you will have an world talent at WR (Chase, Julio, Fitz) or DB (Ramsey, Berry, Peterson) that deserves to go to top 5. But in general, you should always stick to that plan or trade out. Realistically, if the Falcons couldn't trade back, they should have drafted either Chase or Sewell at No. 4. Either one would have filled the roles of their aging stars (Julio or Matthews). And those 2 were the safest bets to be stars in that draft, other than T-Law who obviously was a generational talent at QB.

Speaking of the draft, the 2024 draft has some pretty elite talent. Good time to picking towards the top of the draft if you have a need at QB, OT, Edge, or WR. Hard to say where the Titans go. Assuming we have no shot at Maye or Williams, my preference would be Harrison followed by Fashanu or Alt. While we obviously could use an elite edge (so could everyone), our pass rush isn't really a major issue this year. Our WR depth however, is trash. And our OTs are constantly blown up.

Going to have to trade Henry to avoid winning 6-8 games I think.

Nah, our schedule is pretty tough and Tajae Spears has more burst than Henry anyways. Tanne is also gonna miss a minimum of 2 games looks like (assuming he isn't traded). We will likely be the underdog in all remaining games except for the Panthers. I don't see us winning more than 3 more games and finishing at 5-12, which should give us a top 5 pick.

DIdn't say I agreed with Pitts, he was BPA at 4, I personally wanted Sewell. WOuld have been happy with Chase. Would have been happy with Parsons, but he would have been considered a huge stretch at 4.

Could be wrong but the more I watch this year's draft QB crop we could be a generational draft. I suspect a few of the Juniors will stay in college for that reason. Williams, Maye, Nix, Penix, Sanders, McCarthy, Leonard, Pratt, etc.

There's multiple QBs would could have been top 3 in any of the last 10 drafts.

Obviously multiple of them will bomb. Because it's the NFL it's the hardest jump in sports. But this could contend with the 83 or 04 draft for multiple high level QBs to come out.

I wonder if the Falcons could get a franchise QB at the end of the first round, Nix and Penix could be there. Sanders and McCarthy should be there.

I know that's probably how the college QBs will see it but if I was them I wouldn't be worried about draft spot. Better to go to a good organization in the middle of the first like the Steelers who are a good QB away from being a competitive team than go top 5 to a perennial loser like the Browns or just a team that isn't ready to compete. The rookie contract is a drop in the bucket compared to what they will earn after that.
