REAL FOOTBALL Thread

More don't succeed than do if they start immediately. Ryan was not that good at the start. And you named 3 guys who were drafted in the top 3 overall. Those are the cream of the crop guys.

I'm talking more guys like Bortles, coming in from a school like that. He will probably be starting by the end of the year, and that's a mistake to me. Bridgewater should even sit for a year IMO. The Texans should sign McCown to a nice 1-year deal, draft Teddy, and let him sit and learn. There is no QB in this draft who should not sit for at least one year.

I think teams not drafting QBs early when they have a guy in place is more due to the fact that most teams have a lot of holes to fill, and simply can't worry about it. It would not surprise me to see Belichick take a QB early next year in anticipation of Brady leaving. It's a very smart thing for a franchise to do.

Belichek takes a lot of QBs. the replacement could very well be Mallet.

I wonder how many articles will come out after D-Halls comments on RG3 and the organization.

http://www.csnwashington.com/footba...ll-talks-dysfunction-between-shanahan-and-rg3

"there wasn't dysfunction until the order came down that we were shutting RG down. Then the leaders in the lockeroom were very upset" Mentioned how they were upset the the Skins Best player and leader was benched. hmmm..

Also, a comment from one of the Washington Post writers.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...portis-on-the-redskins-and-anonymous-sources/

"Also, it’s easy for Portis (or me) to talk bad about anonymous sources when we aren’t beat writers, tasked with the unenviable chore of breaking news while making sure other local or national outlets do not get ahead of us on any stories.

That said, he (and I) could point out that you have to make judgment calls on when information is important and newsworthy enough to offer the protection of anonymity. And that some of the character attacks on various Redskins figures this season — comments that clearly wouldn’t have been made if the talkers were required to put their names on the line — might really have failed that judgment test, depending on the judge."

Ryan Mallet would be an interesting one. Any team with a possible QB hole is tied to a rumor of him being on the block, he's relatively young (26 when next season starts) but I don't know if he's young enough to replace Brady, Brady is a cap casualty until 2016, so minimum of 2 more years under team control. Mallett is a free agent after 2014 meaning that to keep him around the Pats would have to pay both him and Brady. I think they get a 3 or maybe a 2 for Mallett. As far as replacements for Brady, who knows.

That said Broncos certainly should be drafting a QB to groom under Peyton. Someone like AJ McCarron or Aaron Murray in the 3rd would probably be ideal. Someone with a brain and decent arm. Who can step in and utilize those weapons.

Would love to see the Bears move up and take Clowney - they desperately need a strong pass rush with the offense that they have. Could play very similar to the Colts during the Peyton Manning days.

Bears are not gonna trade from 14 all the way up to 2.

If you compare to the RG3 trade, which was from 6 to 2 and the skins gave up 3 number ones and a number 2. FOr the Bears to move that high (unless literally no other team is interested in that pick and the Rams really don't want the pick) think 3 ones, 3 twos and probably 2 threes. It would be the ultimate in buy now drafting. And I think the Bears would do wiser to sit back and just fill up the depth chart. Clowney they have no shot at, at their pick they still should get an impact starter,

Now what they should watch for in a trade up potential, is if Barr falls. Say CLowney falls to the Falcons or Matthews falls to the Falcons and they take one of them, Tampa may trade out and let the Bears take Barr, that may be worth losing their second round+ for.

Hard to say what the proposed deal would be. ONe deal is from 6 to 2 and for Clowny it would be 14 to ????? To compare, if the Bears were 6 this year and tried to trade up to 2, then they wouldn't have to give up as much as the Redskins did bc A) Clowny isnt a QB and B) he's not as high of a prospect as RG3 was (due in part to position). And we don't know if there are other teams trying to trade up for Clowney like there were for RG3.

It's the 2 pick regardless. Skins could have taken someone besides RG3. It has to do with the market. If Atlanta and Tampa want to move up to 2, why would they not take a haul to move down to 14. Who would you rather have Barr/Mack/Watkins,etc. or whoever is left or whoever picks last.

The Skins weren't moving to 2 to take someone other than RG and the cost to move to get the QB they wanted is certainly higher than it would be if it was a different player. The Rams had the advantage of multiple teams wanting to trade up to 2 to get RG3 and worked the teams against each other to maximize the return.

YOu aren't going to see a team trade that much to move to number 2 to draft a defensive end.

Agree with giles, it cost so much because RG3 was sitting there. That won't happen again.

Giles, thoughts on Jay? Some eagles fans are saying this guarantees them bottom feeders for 2-4 years. Not sure I agree.

Not my first choice, but the guy does know the game and is well respected. He was successful in getting Andy Dalton to be a respectable QB so he has that in his favor.

I think it's a solid choice; not a bad one or a great one. I've read some good things about him, but it comes down to how much talent you believe Dalton has. He was a 2nd round pick out of TCU. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Dalton, I think our own Cousins may be just as good as him. So with Dalton's first 3 years and absolutely no running game, they put up a league average offense (and playoff team).

So the success of the decision probably comes down to how well Gruden can help RG3 play. He's been praised for his work with QBs and obviously has vast coaching ties. I'd say Im underwelmded, but cautiously optimistic.

My biggest concern is what he's going to do with defensive staff and how we get the defense and ST's to improve.

On Clowney, it may not cost as much as RG3 did.

But it would at least cost two 1's, two 2's, and a 3, maybe a player as well.

I'll start doing my three round mock later in the month. For now, here's a new first round mock for you all to mull over:

Saints opening as 8.5 point underdog. That's the most in the Brees Saints era. Highly considering betting my entire savings on this game.

Also I have no problem with the saints taking Trent Murphy. I love me some Kyle Van Noy though. Payton unveiled a new 3 te scheme against the eagles and if it works against the hawks I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a TE like Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

Thatn would be stupid unless your savings is under a grand. Seattle is at home on a bye. NO just played a rough game in Philly. I'm not saying that NO will lose, or get blown out, the line is that high for a reason, Seattle at home is virtually unbeatable, and they have a week to get rested and healthier.
