Rosenthal: Fredi will be fired, possibly by end of the road trip

I can understand not wanting your new manager to come in and face plant his first year. Not an ideal situation. Keeping Fredi allows you to scapegoat him and start fresh next season with a new manager, an improved roster, and a new park.

Ding ding ding. This is exactly what is happening.

I realize this team has a lot of issues and hesitate to pile this on here. But I've found Fredi's use of infielders curious this year. It seems to me as a general proposition that second is a more difficult and important defensive position than third. Given a choice you want your better defender at second. This is a general proposition. I'm sure there are cases where you want to make exceptions, possibly having to do with where the players in question have the most experience.

But we've seen several games where Castro plays third while KJ plays second. And last night Beckham at third while D'Arnaud (who had an error) played second. Am I missing something there or imagining an issue that doesn't exist. This team generally is poor defensively. But little tweaks such as putting the better defender at second and weaker one at third would help some. If my memory serves me correctly, earlier we had Jace in left and KJ at second in several games. Again it seems to me you want the stronger defender at second and the weaker one in left, assuming both players are reasonably comfortable at both positions.

You aren't missing anything. These are unquestionably the wrong moves to make. They probably make very little difference, especially with a team this bad, but they are free improvements that only require the stroke of a pen by a competent manager.

Like many have said, Fredi isn't going to be fired because the team is bad this year. Fredi is going to be fired because he has consistently made moves that lower the team's chances of winning. They are just waiting until they need to sacrifice someone to appease the fan base.

Tough stretch coming up with road games at royals and pirates. Get swept by philly and I don't think fredi makes it after the pirate series. A 7-33 record is very possible.

With Inciarte back, Freddie hitting well and the pitching shaping up, I think the team might start doing better soon in terms of wins and losses.
