Rosenthal: Fredi will be fired, possibly by end of the road trip

No bueno. What the hell was that? Too much "X needs to learn to control himself."

Baseball is a hard game. It's hard on the emotions. One way a manager can make a real - if intangible - difference is by going out there and fighting for his guys.

Freddie Freeman doesn't need you to point out his shortcomings in the AJC. He needs you to go tell Joe West in overly strong terms to call a fair ****ing game. And to kick dirt on that asshole's shoes and to steal third base and take it into the clubhouse on the way out.

And if you've got something to say to Freddie, to say it in your office and then give the big guy a hug.

Yeah . . . it's strange. He's a Cox protege who never managed to add that bit to his toolkit.

But, yannow, break a cinderblock over my chest.

I'm ready for Fredi to go, but I agree that the hotseat talk—at this juncture—is bull****. This team is godawful in a way that has nothing to do with Fredi.

I don't know if that's on Fredi or the players, but it has become a disturbing pattern. Could be a respect thing.

My only consistent beef with Gonzalez has been his use of the bullpen. Plays the match-up thing too often and depletes who is available, which leads to overworking some guys. Sometimes you have to roll with a guy through an entire inning instead of going righty-lefty-righty and blowing three pieces. If you're ahead in a close game, that's one thing and a pattern like that can be justifiable. But if it's April and you're down six runs, let the guy go.

To be fair on bullpen overuse Cox did the same thing. Mike Remlinger, Lightenburg, Stanton could all testify to it.

My biggest issue with him is that he does not take up for his players.

That whole thing is so overblown!! After it became apparent that Bobby was going to break the ejection record I was actually ashamed of him for sticking up for grown men that shouldn't need sticking up for in the first place, and besides the odds of changing a call by making an ass out of one's self is slim and none and replay has made it worse.

Well, I'll grant that we are in the realm of the immeasurable, but Bobby certainly did seem to have engender respect and love from his players. Having their backs, even when it seemed silly, was part of that equation, I think.

I've use this example before, but it bears repeating. Gary Sheffield was a prickly guy who had problems with management for most of the early part of his career. He showed Bobby respect and loyalty was which was commensurate with what Bobby offered him. No way of knowing for sure, but I doubt it would've been the same with Fredi.

Cox continously putting in Remlinger when he was better against righties than lefties is also there too.

Cox would also start turrible vets over talented young players which is about the worst in game decision a manager can make. I'll never forgive him for those 135 games of Garrett Anderson.

It was tiresome, I agree. But I think his thought process was that the Vets would break out eventually and they generally knew how to not screw up more even when they are struggling. Things like putting the ball in play with less than 2 outs and a man on 3rd, how to move runners over, etc.

@mlbbowman
.@MatthewHLeach and I talked about Fredi Gonzalez's status on today's podcast http://atmlb.com/1HI4ncb

Mark Bowman needs to be fired with Fredi. He is the most painfully namby-pamby, wishy washy sports commentator in the business. I'd almost rather listen to Shanks. He has no brain but at least he isn't afraid to commit to a verb or an adjective. Which is worse - the brainless scarecrow or the cowardly lion?

Fine by me, I don't like Bowman or DOB personally. I liked that kid that was doing MLB.com for us some in the past, his name I forget at the moment. It's too bad someone like him didn't replace Mark Bowman.

Just fire him already. He has no future here. Take the time to see if Eddie Perez is a legitimate option as our interim manager.

Sounds like Fredi has been given a reprieve, and he'll be have this next stretch of 13 games starting Tuesday to turn the team around.

Though they were hoping to avoid having to address this development before the end of the season, Braves executives have been left with no choice but to at least discuss whether they need to relieve Gonzalez of his managerial duties and possibly give the job to either bench coach Eddie Perez or first-base coach Terry Pendleton.

There was speculation a change was either going to be made late last week or on Monday, when the Braves enjoy an off-day ahead of a three-game set that begins against the Phillies on Tuesday. But over the past few days, it seems Atlanta has become more receptive to giving Gonzalez at least a couple more weeks to compete against a kinder schedule and a roster that now includes Ender Inciarte, the energetic outfielder who returned on Saturday from a month-long absence caused by a strained left hamstring.

And the 3 games have been pretty competitive. The defensive blunders on Friday...

wouldn't you say the defensive blunders cost us today as well.. Aybar makes that easy DP and we win 3-2.. of course, who knows how the rest of the game plays out.. but just saying. our defense has been atrocious and our pitchers seriously need to be allowed to kick all of our fielders square in the nuts when they can't make a play... just pause the game.. swift kick.. ten minute recovery time, then start back up.

I like this idea, but I don't think we should deprive the Aybar family of a chance to have a kid.

Note to Braves front office: don't draft this kid.

Remember when we had the dropoff from Furcal to "sure handed Renteria"? We knew Aybar was gonna be a dropoff... but man he's got a be the worst in the league.
