Second ('Third') Trump Presidency Thread

Dear lord you guys show again and again you can't think past first order operations

Man you used to argue in good faith but any criticism of your god turns you into a hysterical psychopath

The argument that me, aces, chop have made is that implementing tarrifs is bad.

You are now celebrating the fact that we are not implementing tarrifs.

Thank you for agreeing with us that not implementing tarrifs is the smart thing to do

Wait a second - I said the tariffs on Canada/Mexico were not economic in nature from the beginning. Don't move the goalposts becuase you were wrong.

China tariffs are completely different.

What price increase? Mexico was so terrified they came groveling back in 48 hours after talking tough.

Like Tapate said - Take a breath guys.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this but sometimes countries manage to negotiate these exact types of deals without publicly threatening to tank their allies’ economies. It’s some strange word called diplomacy. Claiming tariffs will help us make money only to not use those tariffs and publicly claim victory because that ally cooperated with you on a completely unrelated issue is silly at best, and a fundamental misunderstanding of how relationships work at worst.

What was I wrong about? That tariffs are bad... and that Trump won't end up doing it because they will be very unpopular.

we are one day into this and we're already delaying

I’m not sure you are aware- you are but the point stands - that there are libs here and abroad already bitching because eggs aren’t half price

That’s a silly expectation to have, but which policies are in motion that will drive down the price of eggs? If inflation is avoidable and Biden caused it all, when should I expect prices to fall and which policies are driving that drop?

I also fail to see how that has anything to do with my point.

Trump isn't doing it because he got what he wanted out of Mexico.

The only reason he did it was to get these concessions.

You trying to take a victory lap here is hysterical.

Anyone who didn't realize this is what he as doing with Canada/Mexico just isn't that bright.

Not sure how else to put it but it was telegraphed.

If tarrifs are meant to drive economic activity back to the United States, that hasn't happened here.

if tariffs are meant to threaten a punishment (i.e. tariffs are bad), then... OK, great. He could also threaten a military invasion or a nuclear strike and probably get similar results

Or he turned a basic State Department negotiation into a sideshow by duping Americans into believing he was going to replace income taxes with tariffs he never planned to implement.

Ah yes - Threaten a nuclear strike. That'll work just as well!

silly you for not doubling your money last night. I put a few thousand on it last night at 45 cents. contract is currently trading for 14 cents

guess you're just not as bright as me to see that one coming, eh?

I bet you a gazillion dollars if Trump threatened military force unless Mexico deployed the National Guard to the border, you’d have the same result. One way Trump *might* be correct is that tariffs aren’t seen as extreme a threat, but at some point your allies stop being your allies and find new ones (such as China, perhaps) or stop listening to your threats if you don’t follow through.

this. as the trump team is dancing and laughing about how they were never actually gonna implement these amazing tariffs... not sure why I would take them seriously the next time

Again, a major thing I see missing from the MAGA foreign policy playbook is any understanding of *why* America spends like a drunken sailor on foreign aid. Keeping China out of any place of national interest is apparently crucial, but spending money to do so is seen as wasteful. Military intervention is rightfully still seen as bad (unless other countries suggest they disagree, at which point it becomes common sense to leave it on the table) so economic coercion becomes the “obvious” tool. I’m not an expert on geopolitics, so maybe this will just work forever and we’ll all be rich *and* have strong allies. But color me skeptical that playing that card for every item on our wishlist will work out long-term.

This is a disgusting way to do business and nobody would actually believe Trump would launch a nuclear weapon.

Tariffs are easy to go through because nobody wants to lose access to the US markets.

I mean you guys are just being silly right now to save face and I'm here for it.

“Nuclear bomb threats are easy to go through because nobody wants to be nuked!”

One key difference between us on tariffs seems to be that I also believe threatening an ally with financial ruin that also harms your own citizens is itself a disgusting way to do business.

This is my concern with all the tarrif bluster. 10k troops at border sounds good, but is it? What do they do. How will it help? Is it just bluster to give a concession that doesn't matter?

No, no. Donald Trump got a headline that he tariffed his way to 10,000 new troops in the war on drugs which is what we’re really after as a nation.
