Gee, I wonder if anything might have happened in 2016 that might have led to a precipitous drop in Democrats being proud of this country.

Though I do think it highlights the extent to which Republicans view themselves as the real Americans when compared to Dems. The drop after Obama’s election was much less extreme despite the dislike of Obama, but anecdotally I have generally seen Republicans claim Obama was the fault of some nebulous out group within America rather than a reflection of the country itself, whereas I see Trump more often portrayed as what’s wrong with America by his opponents.

One other difference is Trump is just very omnipresent in a way no other President has ever been. Because of his outsized influence and love for being the news, Trump has been more polarizing on the “image of America” front.

Something being better isn’t the only factor in whether or not you take pride in it. I was always good at taking tests because I can retain new information easily. Thus I took no pride in getting a B+ on a test because I wasn’t doing all I could with my natural advantages. That doesn’t mean I would want to trade places with someone who worked their ass off for a B-.

I don’t see why that same concept is wrong to apply to America if you don’t think we’re using our resources effectively, even if we still provide better outcomes for citizens than Mexico. The right is big on American Exceptionalism when it pertains to our comparative advantages, but really quiet when it comes to ways in which we aren’t driving that ideal as much as we could.
 
Some of us think America IS a great country. In contrast to those belonging to a political movement whose name is predicated upon the idea that America is no longer great.
