State data are interesting. A lot of red states have seen declines in white people's life expectancy from 1990 to 2018, including Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia.

One of the differences between red and blue states is capacity to recognize a problem and do something about it. Places like Oklahoma will go on congratulating themselves for being safe and low crime, when in fact they have much higher homicide rates than big bad cities like New York. In contrast, places like NY and San Francisco are big enough to recognize a problem and do something about it.
Same for thangs like per capita GDP and life expectancy. The secret sauce for raising both aint all that secret. But ideological blinkers will continue to doom parts of the country to perpetual relative poverty and poor results when it comes to health and mortality.

Yes. The pendulum swung too far toward permissiveness in public spaces and there is a correction taking place.
Same for the recently passed Proposition 36, which reclassifies some crimes as felonies.
Blue states have their problems and excesses. But there is more of a capacity to correct course. In the past this involved electing Republican governors. Sadly, in California the GOP is a shadow of its former self, choosing recently to nominate the likes of Steve Garvey and Larry Elder for statewide office. It would be great if it resumed nominating serious candidates.

Homicides, auto burglaries, and other crimes fell steeply last year in San Francisco, pushing the city’s crime rate to its lowest level since 2001, Mayor London Breed announced Tuesday.
Breed, citing data from the San Francisco Police Department, said reported property crimes were down 31% from 2023, and violent crimes were down 14%.
The 35 homicides recorded last year in San Francisco were the fewest in 60 years. Auto break-ins, which skyrocketed during the pandemic, fell below 10,000 incidents for the first time in nearly 15 years, down 54% from 2023.

It only took 30 years for your preferred policies to destroy the best state in the country. They actually managed to lose population and congrssional seats. Tremendous!
It probably wouldn't take 30 years to fix it... but the highly educated population refuses to evolve

It is kinda unfair that high-income states widened the gap like this. Same with life expectancy, educational attainment, various measures of health.

Take what consolation you want from that. People make a good living in blue states and decide to retire somewhere cheap. Blue states are far from perfect. But they do a lot of thangs better in terms of generating productivity growth, better educational outcomes and better health and mortality outcomes. They attract younger well-educated people while losing older less well-educated folks. I guess it is a symbiotic relationship. The slow lane for those who prefer that. And a faster lane for those who want to be on the cutting edge.
