Some Red State/Blue State Indicia

I bet if Mississippi’s demographics were swapped, California would be much worse off than Mississippi given the same sample and variables

Mississippi and other southern states closed the gap with the rest of the country for many decades after the Civil War. That stopped about 50 years ago. We've been seeing divergence during this period on metrics like income, life expectancy, etc. Maybe red states have just been unlucky, fat, etc. But maybe policy makes a difference too.

My original question which has been deflected on twice now was

Why do you think California, with its immense and funding and enormous investments into education, is struggling so badly that they are losing to Mississippi?

Eh. No one is losing to Mississippi, whose main function is to make West Virginia look good.

But I do give Mississippi and Louisiana a lot of credit for doing better by their schoolchildren. No one should be too proud to try to learn from their achievement.
