Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

Its certainly possible but Sosa was just a guy that reared back and threw. Someone with his stuff should have been a decent pitcher but he had no clue what he was doing. Its kind of the opposite with Garcia and I'll take the skillset that Garcia has over a guy like Sosa any day of the week.

Garcia gave up over 2 homers per 9 innings last year. He had an FIP of 5.50. Almost anyone with a pulse is better.

I don't like moving a guy like that mid season.

But the reality is that Wood is being prepared this spring to start. The team has already announced that he along with Hale would have their arms stretched out in spring training. So once you do that there isn't a case for moving him to the pen at the start of the season.

We will see how he pitches because it certainly feels like he is going to be in the rotation. I don't expect him to be great but I think he will be an average #5.

Thats a fair point and its something to certainly consider. It will be interesting to see what the Braves do and I would hope that whatever the result of that decision is (Garcia make good pitch or make bad pitch) then I'd hope the community will man up and say they were wrong.

Wrong about what? We have five better alternatives than Garcia for the rotation. I don't think there is any dispute about that. The only question is whether you limit Wood's innings when Floyd gets back or do it earlier in the season.

You are basing that on the assumption that Garcia is going to pitch poorly. I think he will do an ok job which will allow us to limit Woods innings now.

Can we either have a new Spring Training Game Thread or move this discussion to the another thread?

I don't think there will be enough interest in an individual spring training game to merit its own thread. Maybe we should label this the spring training discussion thread.

I'm not making any such assumption. I'm just stating we have five better alternatives for the rotation and the only issue is how best to limit Wood's innings.

You are making as assumption though that an addition to the rotation in mid-may will allow us to do so. I don't think thats a definite. Also, what if Beachy goes on the shelf? I just think when you plan in the future there are variables that come into play that need to be considered.

I'm saying that should be Plan A, our best alternative. I think we should have a Plan B in case something happens to Floyd during his rehab. Plan B could be having Garcia or Hale pitch for a while in the rotation. But you only put Plan B into effect if something happens that moves you off Plan A.

Break up the Braves!!!!!!!!!

Phil Gosselin bay-beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nobody meets the guy at home plate like Phil does!

I just disagree that him starting in April and potentially May based on performance is that big of a deal. Its not like we are going to let him suck out there and keep rolling him out. The hope is that he is pitching well to merit more starts until it makes sense to move Wood into the rotation.

Exactly. The Braves won 96 games with Paul Maholm putting up an ERA of over 5 over the course of 22 starts. Garcia potentially getting 10-15 starts is not that big a deal. Especially when he will only be getting those starts if he pitches well.

What if Garcia isn't on the roster if he isn't a starter coming out of ST?

Apparently, the Gnats brought in their right fielder to be a fifth infielder. And Gosselin hit the ball to right field and ended up with a triple.
