Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

Chris Johnson is a decent point as we didn't bring him up. LaStella would likely be extended if we really wanted him, or traded down the road like Prado. We get him for his prime years regardless. Age does matter in his case because he's not like Simmons, he's 25. By the time his 6 years are up he will be 31. Freeing up salary by having a 31 year old leave isnt the end of the workd...but I believe he'll be extended or dealt before he ever reaches that point. It's seems short sighted but it's small potatoes IMO. It can be worked around fairly easily

It could be argued the other way. For a guy potentially hitting free agency at 26-27 there is more of a chance you will extend that player (making the service clock moot) than a guy hitting free agency at 31 (who you would be reluctanct to extend).

The bottom line is Dan Uggla will be our starting 2nd baseman on March 31st, whether we like it or not. How long he stays there is the question. What level of performance must he achieve to keep the starting job?

Agreed.

My guess is .700 OPS is the number he has to hit. Last season he was .738 in the first half and .529 in the second.

If he is under .700, he'll be gone by mid-May. In the meantime, the team wants to give him as comfortable an environment as possible to turn things around. There are not going to be any ultimatums or anything like that. If he doesn't turn it around, he'll just be told one day that he's been released. I'm rooting for Dan to turn it around and agree with the decision to give him five or six weeks. But I'm not optimistic.

OOPS. Missed Saturday being split squad day.

Here first is LOSS to NATIONALS

Breaking down SATURDAY box

Got to be honest with you, even for spring, all this losing and pathetic offense is getting on my nerves

Lipka 2-4, R, SB (he is impressing people and is taking many ground balls at second and third)

Gattis 1-4, RBI 2 Ks (that might be his typical line this season)

Scahfer 1-4, 2 K, outfield assist

Uggla 0-3, 2 K

Freeman 1-3, HBP (.429)

Simmons 2-4, R

Salcedo 0-2, 2 K, 2 E

Hale 2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER

Thomas 1.1 IP, 0 H, 3 K 2.08 (this guy is looking more and more like Cinderella 2014)

Buchter 1 IP, 0 H, 1 K (overdue outing)

Gearrin 1 IP, 0 H, 1 K (3.38)

Jaime (LP) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 R, 1 BB (2.25)

Now here is 6-6 TIE with MARLINS

18 total hits yet no win. Arrgh.

Heyward 3-3, 2 R (.348)

Constanza 3-5, 2B, R (fillin for BJ, who had minor booboo)

Terdoslavich 1-2, RBI, OF Assist from RF

Doumit 2-3, RBI

La Stella 2-5, RBI (.346)

JUp 2-3, R, 3RBI

Garcia 2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 K (reality check?)

Schlosser 2.1 IP, 1 H, 4 BB, 4 K, 0 R (Take him north, Fredi)

Walden 1 IP, 0 H, 1K

Simmons 1 IP, 1 H, 1 K (more like it)

Rodriguez 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB (2.84)

Again, first cuts coming soon

Yep gotta start to win a few by next week. It's excusable right now, but need positive mommentum that first week with that Nats series so early in the year. We can't afford to take any series with them lightly. This pitching scares me to death.

Buddy is at the game...tho he's a Mets fan. Said the Mets players mentioned LaStella would be starting over Uggla this year. They're Mets, so take it with a grain of salt

Medlen leaves game. Threw a pitch. Hopped off the mound in pain and walked straight to the tunnel. Hard to say what the injury was.

Not good folks. Not good................................

It appeared that Medlen grabbed his elbow as he came off mound, but nothing yet from #Braves about the injury.

:Gasp:

Minor, Beachy, and now Medlen already with warning signs (or injuries). Not good.
