The number of administrators at Yale University has increased drastically faster than its undergraduate population, with the Ivy nearing an abysmal ratio of 1:1 before the pandemic due to its more than 5,000 administrators and managers and fewer than 6,000 undergraduates, according to financial reports from the 2002-2003 and 2020-2021 school years. Now the numbers are even worse, with more than one administrator per undergraduate student.
As evidenced by the financial report from 2002-2003, Yale employed 3,500 administrators and managers while there were 5,307 undergraduate students enrolled at the university. Less than two decades later in 2019, before the pandemic affected enrollment, Yale employed more than 1,500 additional administrators while the undergraduate population had only risen by 600 students. Now undergraduate enrollment has dipped to 4,703, with more than 5,000 “managerial and professional staff.”

With the number of minutes of daylight in New Haven dropping each week, some students have expressed increased stress levels as they head into the final few weeks of the semester.
Students explained that they are still adjusting to the change as they start to leave their discussion sections in the dark, their days feel shorter and melatonin initiates earlier in the day. Jaden Gonzalez ’25 said that, even after living in New York his whole life, he finds the whole concept of daylight saving to be confusing and said he felt “victimized” by its occurrence.
“Personally, I respond really well to daytime,” Gonzalez said. “I know nothing about the occurrence and why it happens, but I know that I genuinely have worse days because I cannot enjoy the sun as much as I normally could.”

Or better yet, invest the money you would’ve paid each month, then make a lump sum payment the day before the loans restart. I’d hope folks with a college education could exceed a 0% return…pretty low bar to clear.
And the federal govt should’ve considered SOME incentive for people to continue paying during the pause, considering many (most?) don’t need the relief. Something like if you continue your payments, we reduce your interest rate by X after the pause, or for every $1 you pay, we’ll reduce the principle by $1x.

(The online poll was conducted by Momentive between Jan. 10 and Jan. 13 among a national sample of 5,162 adults.)
Just 29% of respondents ranked student loans resuming in the spring as the most probable outcome. More than a quarter think the likelier situation is that the pause is prolonged beyond May, while 14% of people anticipate full loan forgiveness and another 28% expect some cancellation.
When the U.S. Department of Education announced that it was extending the payment pause in August, it said that would be the final break. Yet it then announced in December that borrowers would get more time, citing concerns about the new omicron variant of Covid-19. The payment pause has now been extended five times.
“You can cry wolf only so many times before borrowers no longer believe that the payment pause and interest waiver are ending,” said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz.

It's ironic that the extensions are to give borrowers "more time to prepare" for their loan payments to restart, yet the more times the government extends the pause, the more borrowers think they'll ultimately never have to pay them back. I'd be surprised if borrowers are currently getting their financial ducks in a row if only 29% think they'll actually have to start paying in May...
