Taking a look at the potential postseason roster

Culberson just isn’t a starter imo and I think it threw him off. He’s better coming off the bench imo. He’ll get hot again.

hot=lucky

he might get hot (lucky) come the playoffs

but that's not a rational basis for making the decision

culberson has been an extremely lucky hitter the last couple years

yea he proved you wrong everytime you predicted against him last year, lol. Eventually you will be right about him.

The biggest current holes in the roster are RHH OFer and a LHP in the BP. Both were clear needs at the deadline when AA went out and got 3 RHPs instead.

Hopefully the inability to platoon in the OF doesn’t hurt against a team with a lot of good LHPs, and hopefully a string of excellent LHHs don’t expose the BP.

I just don't see any way Inciarte doesn't make the playoff roster in any series if he is healthy. Effectively its either him or Hamilton at that point if you aren't even planning on starting Ender. Its just not a smart idea to go into any playoff series with one guy that can play CF.

I’d go Inciarte over Markakis, but that’s largely because I don’t see a lot of utility in Markakis if Joyce is on the roster (plus I fear Snitker won’t platoon Markakis like he will Joyce).

No fear. It is fact. No chance that snit doesn’t start Neck 100% if healthy.

this team is better without Markakis.
and yes, part of that is because he won't be used properly.

Ok so seems like a good time to update. I think Duvall will be on the roster and the way the Braves are playing it Camargo will too.

I also have Swarzak getting the boot. I’m still advocating fo Fried in the pen as I think that’s how we’ll maximize his value in a playoff series but it’s looking more and more like a Folty/Teheran race.
A meta level move would be to use Fried as an opener and then bring in Teheran to get the platoon advantages the rest of the way. Of course that’s not gonna happen though. O’Day vs Sabotka will need some time to play out but that’s the match in the pen to watch.

And of course it looks like Ender is gonna be out so we’ll have to adjust accordingly.

I don't think it sounds obvious that Ender is going to be out. It sounds to me like he will be back at least a week before the regular season ends and if he appears healthy, he will certainly be on the roster. O'Day vs. Sabotka is a no brainer to me. Fried should easily be in the rotation.

Riley keeps hurting his case as well.

I dunno. I’ve been hearing a lot of reports that Ender would miss the first series. Haven’t gotten to see much of either O’Day or Sabotka recently but O’Day has been great over his career and would be a valuable addition if able to pitch well but Sobotka has the power arm. Fried will be in the rotation and deserves it. I think he should be in the pen just to give us the 3rd lefty option and to be able to use him in any situation we need to. It would also make it unlikely he gets over exposed to a lineup.

It has been widely reported he will be back in about 10 days.

So BP shaping up as:

Melancon
Greene
Martin
Newk
Jackson
Blevins
One of Sobotka/O'Day/Swarzak/Tomlin

Id have liked to see more of Walker down the stretch. A strike throwing ground ball inducer would be perfect for a short sting playoff series.

Agree. Would add two things: Tomlin probably has the inside track over the other three guys listed with him. And also the starter who is bumped from the rotation might be the 7th guy in the pen, in which case none of those last four guys makes it.

There are some alternative scenarios that are unlikely but not entirely fanciful: 1) We go with an 8 man pen, 2) Dayton makes the post-season roster as a third lefty or beats out Blevins as second lefty.
