The Coronavirus, not the beer

So what you're actually saying is that the deaths from COVID in July are likely significantly higher, but they simply won't be reported til August?

One of the things I've learned recently is that the lags between when someone dies and when it are reported is quite long in some states.

President Trump wore a mask in public for the first time Saturday, more than three months after public health officials from his own administration recommended that all Americans cover their face when social distancing was not possible.

Trump’s decision to don a mask during a trip to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center followed several months of controversy over his reluctance to abide by public health guidelines even as coronavirus cases surged nationwide. Before wearing the navy-colored mask Saturday, Trump had disparaged his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, for wearing a mask and publicly downplayed the importance of face coverings.

glad to see this

One of the mysteries in recent weeks is why deaths in New Jersey remain so high. Cases have come down a lot. It is a sort of the reverse of the situation in other states where cases went up sharply but deaths didn't. Reporting lags might be the answer in both situations.

Perhaps so, but the tweeter sold it like it was from bars opening which was incorrect. She deserved to be called out.

In short yes, it's reporting lag

Two questions come to mind

1) Which month does this graph end

2) The numbers on top of each spike. Do they represent a single peak month? If so it is a bit misleading because COVID has been killing people for over 4 months now. The right comparison would be something like a four month total compared with other periods when the four-month total was high.

Good questions. I looked at worldometers for Sweden's deaths per million currently, and it's 547. Since the chart shows 1026, I'm not sure what to make of it... did they get Sweden's peak in there?

The 1026 is overall deaths. You ideally want the gap between the solid and dotted lines. That's your excess mortality number. And you want to sum it up over an appropriate number of months.

The point I'm making is one month of COVID might be similar to one bad month of flu. But there are two differences. One is COVID is now a multi-month phenomenon in Sweden and elsewhere. So you need to take that into consideration. The other difference is that Sweden has implemented various measures (plus spontaneous behavioral changes) that you don't see during the flu season. So in a sense one month of COVID (with social distancing etc) is like one bad flu month.

Not wearing a mask has the potential to harm other people. Abortions do not. In fact, they are often used to decrease harm to the woman. It's not that hard to understand why there is a difference.

Ahh yes. No living being is harmed in an abortion.

Thanks for that reminder

Over 15,000 new cases reported by Florida.

Testing way up. That's good to see.
