The Trump Presidency

It's not really a weird patent law. Just a weird drug that is expensive to make and wouldn't be much cheaper than the patented version today. There are generic versions but they aren't much cheaper than the expensive, patented one.

You literally said it was a weird patent law.

We should probably talk about how private drug development piggybacks on public investment through the NIH. So that US innovation that you’re touting is underwritten at the start by public funds.

I don’t think you’re 100% wrong, but you’re basically just posting Pharma press releases.

You are saying that Ukraine’s government was unaware what was at stake?

Or for that matter that Trump goes nuclear If you disagree with him. Only naive people think there wouldn't have been retaliation against Ukraine if their President said he would not help smear Biden.

If I was the Democrats I would so 3 days of examples of Trump retaliating or exploding on people that didnt kiss his ass and give what he wants. Then go over the call again. That should make it very clear what was going on.

AG Barr is flying all over the world trying to find some country to give Trump something to discredit the Russia investigation. Wow!

And WHY?????

Because Trump can't let go of the fantasy of a perceived wrong, even though he should've felt lucky that Russia was behind him.

Thats a strawman. You know the discussion is about ongoing research to develop cures for deadly diseases today.

However, when you make the argument that things like insulin should effectively be for free you set the precedent where the whole profit incentive model is destroyed and then almost certainly kill the great research that is done on a daily basis by the greatest minds in the world.

What major medical cure has come through recently? Jonas Salk found the cure for polio from a grant from the March of Dimes and funding from University of Pittsburgh. He wasn't a big pharma scientist.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. The current method seems long and cruel.

Every european nation knows whats at stake since trumps message for 4 years has been other nations have to pay for defense. In addition, Ukraine was not aware of any plans until a month after the call. So unless your argument is thatt they assumed it was likely well then ill just say that gives grounds to call any negotiation with any foreiflgn leader illegal.

We should definitely use an example from 70 years ago for todays world.

All advanced research is done via the incrntive model. Do you guys think these scientists work for free?

I just spent 15 years on staff at a biological research university that housed over 50 PI's and 100's of grad student and assistants. In the fields of genetics, ecology, virology, botany, animal research etc etc etc.
I will point to two current PI's - retired that continue to operate labs in Emeritus status. Meaning on their own time and investing their own money
Grad students that work 18 hour days then volunteer on weekends teaching science workshops to underprivileged children.
World renown scientists and researchers

my anecdotal experience taught me passion being more the motivator,
those that saw money and profit their motivation washed out young in their careers

I wonder who funds these grants. How those individuals made money? Surely, there was no profit paradigm in those situations.

Profit fuels all innovation and development.

The more government taking others money the worse a situation gets.

Gilead cured Hep C in 2014 and has essentially made HIV undetectable (not cured but pretty much a non issue).

One of thr principle resrarchers was from our university.
Same one was at the forefront of the Seka Virus cure a few years back.

In that state salaries of public employees are made public.
His under $100K

What is the lie? I'd love to hear if you can articulate this further.

Justifying high costs because it supposedly costs exponentially more to make a drug.

Marketing and administration costs represent 5-6 times (or more) the R&D costs itself.

Yes, monopolies never take advantage of their consumers....

Do we need a history lesson?

Do you ubderstand how large and diverse of a pool administrative costs are? This should not be a surprise.

Generic versions are not expensive to produce. The issue is getting around the patent laws. Big Pharma sues anyone that tries to get into the generic game. The financial and time costs this causes basically keeps all competitors from entering the market.
