Time to extend Gattis

But I could use that same argument to state he could get even worse. We know general trends in professional athletes as far as physical and mental growth. I think you can make a strong case that Gattis is mentally way far behind and that could be long term detrimental to his development.

I'm not gonna make that case. I'm gonna make a case on what I've seen which is a guy who swings a t a lot of bad pitches and he hasn't changed that from when I've seen it.

But he is swinging at less bad pitches this year than last year.

That's like saying cause a 400 pound man dropped 20 pounds he's skinny. It's not the case he still has **** pitch recognition even if he's no longer the worst in baseball. Odds of him going from **** to average are pretty much none existent.

Data is all we have to go on. Hunches and guts are fine and dandy, but they don't produce results. Data that tracks what a player does is important.

Well, our eyes. Not hunches, not guts.

At the end of this year I expect Gattis will have had a monster year. And next year, when you make your prediction of what will happen in the future, it will be more favorable because his data will improve.

I'm not saying your comps are mental masturbation. I think they're useful, as far as they go. But you have to watch the player compete with a practiced eye. For instance, I was fairly certain LaStella would far outperform his MLEs. I knew his judgement and approach would carry over. Similarly, I know that Gattis is an excellent hitter, is improving with his recognition (which is a big deal to me) and predictions of a sub-.300 OBP are, well, stupid.

Gattis is clearly more upright when the ball is at the plate this year. You have to wonder if this recent tweak is really going to turn him into an elite hitter. Nobody can deny that he is chasing less junk this year.

So far this year Gattis has improved his outside swing percentage by 14% (45.2 to 38.8). What if he improves it by another 14% next year?

Well, yeah, Giles and Zito are saying exactly that. He cannot improve. And, of course, their historical stats are guarantees of future results.

By '17 his pitch recognition will become pitch precognition, and he will just walk to the base he should be at and let the score keeper know what happened.

He'll just suck the brain right out of the pitcher. Guys will be going on the DL left and right. They'll invent a new surgery.

"Braves fan, Aaron Hammer, who caught Evan Gattis home run, X-Ray results on his swollen hands were negative after catching the 3-run homer"

"I hope Jason Heyward is okay, I understand what a bruise feel like after being hit with a 90 MPH fastball"

"Aaron was referring to the line drive homer by Gattis that approach the non-gloved fan"

I would extend him but only if it was for small money. Buy out all his arby years and have options for 1 or 2 free agent years.

No need to go crazy giving him a longer deal.

Buying out arby years at the very least is always a smart move.
