Trade Deadline/Rumors thread

Your not really wrong. Greinke started pitching 6 months before he was drafted, Price has probably been pitching since he was 10. A lot of people think the root of the problem with all these arm injuries is from pitching when they are young. The bodies are still growing and they usually pitch too much and throwing breaking balls is bad for their arm at that age too. I wont be surprised if Price and Greinke both have TJ surgery in the next few years because its pretty much inevitable for every pitcher these days but I think when they do they will come back stronger with renewed velocity. I like both Price and Greinke long term. I have been swinging from Greinke's nuts since I heard the behind the scenes story of how the Royals came to pick him. You dont go from being a SS to the most polished pitcher in the draft in 6 months without being a special talent. I said Greinke was going to be the closest thing we see to Maddux again and he is having a Maddux-esque year right now. I bet he does well late in his 30's like Maddux because he doesnt need big time heat. He is doing his best this year with his slowest fastball velocity yet. I would offer both 5 years 150 million. Thats 30 million a year. The 5 years is key, it means they come off the books around the time we need to worry about re-signing all the prospects we have/will be graduating. I know for a fact both grew up as Braves fans. I know this wont be the most money total but if they have confidence in themselves they could cash in again after 5 years. Maybe, just maybe giving a higher amount per year plus their affinity to the Braves would be enough to lure one of them. I would sign them both and trade some of our pitching for hitting if it was up to me.

I like the strategy - just afraid that won't get it done. Both are going to get 7 years from someone, and both are going to get at least $200 million. I just don't personally see any way around it.

However, the fact that both guys grew up as Braves fans COULD work in our favor in a BIG way - if Hart & Company paid close attention to how Rizzo structured the Scherzer deal and Liberty will give them the latitude to structure one (at least one) that way as well. Not exactly like Scherzer's of course, but something like that that defers the big money years to much later in the contract when the dollars won't be nearly what they are today. Agreements like that will certainly be much easier to sell a corporate leadership - rarely have I heard of any corporation that isn't in favor of deferring costs. I'd even try to negotiate something simpler - making an annual $5 million payment to Price or Greinke for 7 years after the deal would reduce the commitment to $25 million per while they were active (if they got the same deal Scherzer got), and Liberty's investment geniuses would easily be able to put that $5 million per to work right now to more than pay for those payments.

It doesn't make sense to keep any of the following:

Jim Johnson
Jason Frasor
Luis Avilan
Asshole
Juan Uribe
Jonny Gomes

Not that I disagree, but everyone in baseball could have had Frasor two weeks ago and no one went for him. If anything, that likely makes him someone who would clear waivers after the July 31 deadline.

I frankly don't know what to do with Pierzynski. He's no great shakes, but unless Bethancourt takes a big step forward, A.J. is the only guy we have who remotely resembles a major league catcher. Of course, he's on a one-year deal so he might not be brought back anyway.

A lot can change in two weeks.

Yeah. The Asshole situation stinks.

Another door possibly closed on a Juan Uribe deal . . .

Angels have acquired Conor Gillaspie from the White Sox for cash.

Gillaspie will be short-term option at third for Angels while David Freese is out.

I thought they could be a good match for Uribe..guess they still could be

@grantmcauley: Rehabbing Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in his 4th AB of the game for GCL #Braves today. He's 2-for-4 with HR, 3RBI, 2R.

I wonder what all those 18 year olds think when guys like Freeman come down for rehab and absolutely dominate them. I bet it's pretty cool for them to play alongside a player of that caliber.

Well they don't offer any challenge. He should be on his way to Gwinnett now

Jon Heyman's latest on the Braves . . .

Atlanta is continuing to try to sell Jonny Gomes and Cameron Maybin in addition to Jim Johnson, Juan Uribe and the untradeable Chris Johnson. "They should be able to get something for Johnson," one AL GM said, meaning Jim, not Chris. The Braves have offered Chris Johnson around, showing a willingness to pay his contract, which has about $20 million through 2017, way down. A rival GM said, "the only way they trade Chris Johnson is if they throw in a great player like they did with Melvin Upton."

#marlins are nearing deal with cardinals for Steve cishek

Kyle Barraclough seems awful light at first glance.

I'm with you. Cishek is a likely non-tender, but he's pitched better of late. The Cardinals will no doubt turn him into a useful piece. At the end of the day, this looks like the Cardinals making a smart move and the Marlins dumping salary. Some things will never change.

We can definitely do better than this with Jim Johnson.

Chris Johnson is the worst decision Wren ever made (not necessarily the worst impact/results - but the worst decision). It was baffling from the min it happened

He really was and I was pretty indifferent at the time of the extent, but it was a terrible call. Terrible

In Wren's defense (and I am certainly not a supporter), this is the type thing that happens when year after year you are trying to avoid a rebuild on a budget.

The Braves have been in dire need of a rebuild for years but kept slapping band aides on the team year after year in effort to compete or at least look competitive. Wren saw CJ as a fix for 3B and grasped at that straw essentially settling for mediocrity because it was available.

I don't know what CJ is paying his agent but it isn't enough.

Need to find some way to keep him down there for two more weeks - or at least until we get everyone else traded.

If this team doesn't go on an extended cold streak pretty soon, our 2016 First Round pick won't be protected.

You have to remember who the Cards were dealing with - you know Loria has told the front office to unload as much salary as is humanly possible, regardless of the return.

Yep. At least with guys like Uggla and BJ who ended up as albatrosses there was some logic to their deals. Johnson was in the middle of a bad season but was given a contract as if he was going to be a perennial .300+ hitter.

I equate it to the Tanyon Sturtze signing for JS. As much as people get upset about the Tex deal and trading Wainwrignt, at least those are understandable. Signing Tanyon Sturtze to a major league deal for $750K was baffling. The guy was coming off rotator cuff surgery, you knew he would miss half the year at least, and he had never been a very good pitcher to start. To this day I don't know why we did it. It's not like $750K is a huge amount in baseball but it's just the fact that there was no reason to give him that deal that still bugs me to this day.
