Trades You'd Make At The Drop Of A Hat...

In the 18 games prior to Freemans injury they averaged 5.33 runs per game. I would say thats pretty good.

1) Do you really want me to pick a random-length sample of games when they were balls awful?

2) Do you think that Freddie's injury caused Jace Peterson and Cameron Maybin to stop hitting for a week or 10 days, or made Andrelton Simmons revert to bad habits?

The whole season is just a collection of streaks.

So, I might as well ask. Do you think we're going to average 5.33 runs per game for the rest of the season?

No but I think we would have been a good enough offense to win more than we lose when our pitching inevitably was going to improve.

AND, even riding high in the middle of some extended success, the team is STILL below .500. Now, the argument could be made that they have "turned the corner" and are going to play .700 ball the rest of the way, win the division, the NL and WS. But, even if that were possible, which it isn't, you would have to assume that all the competition would either stay static with their current pace or go back. That's not going to happen either.

The real contenders are about to get better and the Braves are about to get worse.

Keep eyes on the goal. The commitment was made to rebuild. It is working so far. They should not falter now.

The Phillies cannot trade Howard. They have offered to eat a majority of his remaining dollars and no one wants him. he is a terrible player.
Utley is similar - he's just done as a player.
Hamels should've been gone. Luckily for them, a lot of teams are still in it and should still be in it around the deadline. Might be a great time to unload him, especially if someone loses their #1 starter before then. The off-season creates more suitors while the deadline brings more desperation.
I'm not sure why they haven't dealt Paps. Either is he. He wants to go.

The rebuild has happened. The system is loaded with talent at most levels and the influx coming in is strong. Nobody is saying to mortgage the future but C+ prospects won't move the needle. Let's just ride this out for as long as possible and see how good the team is.

The rebuild is happening not happened. Or at least it should be.

The system is not loaded with prospects. It has been improved vastly in the pitching area. There are very few bats and the best ones are essentially the same player as far as offensive production (Albies, Peraza, Smith) who also happen to be blocked at the ML level. The few production bats are having mixed seasons and may or may not be anything but at a minimum are several years away (Davidson, Peterson, Ruiz).

Hart has worked hard to address farm pitching. He needs to do the same for the hitting side of the equation, especially since they emphasized pitching in the draft. I know they just signed three international bats. But those guys are 16/17 years old. They are at least 5 years away.

I think I have to agree here. The farm is much better. But it's almost all pitching, and a lot of high risk/reward pitching at that.

we have 3 slap hitters with good speed who may play for a manager who doesn't steal or hit and run much. Everyone else on the position side is 2017, but more likely 2018 to 2020.

Sounds like thethe is confident we swing the blockbuster trade to get the controllable bat. That hasn't been Hart's MO, but it may happen.

Our positional core of talent is very young and could mostly be retained for the next 5+ years. They acquired so much MLB ready pitching that all financial assets can be directed towards plugging in positional needs.

I know everyone is resigned to the fact that we need power at some positions but you can't fit a round peg into a square hole. Right now we have the speedy singles/doubles hitters. That what we should work with right now. Put Peraza at 3B for a year. Put Mallex in CF and Maybin in RF with Nick in LF. Figure out something at catcher. Buy some timeto see what this team can do.

We don't need to have 4-5 hitting prospects as soon as next year. We have timeto let those kids develop. This team is still one of the youngest in baseball when you take away the 1 year old guys that aren't part ofthe future.

I think Hart accurately pre-emptively identified that there were would be a need for pitching. We have acquired a crazy amount of pitching and should be able to capitalize moving forward. I am very comfortable that hte current front office will make the right moves in the future to identify and fill needs. Right now we should just work with what we have to buy some time.

Well, anybody with the foresight of a snail could've/should've seen the direction the Phils were headed in ~3 years ago and moved Howard/Utley post haste. Howard would've been harder, even then, but Utley not so much. Amaro didn't want to let go of his 'core' and the organization is paying the price now.

I see two risks in hanging onto Hamels; 1) He's not getting any younger 2) The potential for injury, which would devastate his trade value -- which has to be about at its peak right now.

You cannot win routinely with a team full of slap hitters in modern baseball no matter how many good feelings you have about it.

Good teams, playoff teams, and certainly WS winners typically have enough power guys to finish above average in HR production. If you look at the past 25 years you will see that almost every team that has made the playoffs has been better than league average with power. Sure there have been anomalies but must have come from teams with heavily pitcher friendly parks (and divisions) such as the Dodgers and Giants.

You sound like Joe Simpson who wants everyone to be a hit-it-the-other-way slap hitter because that's what he was. Last time I checked Joe Simpson didn't have much of a career as a baseball player.

Joe Simpson, of all people, was lamenting the team's lack of "quick-strike" ability last week. That should say it all.

All I'm saying is I want to see what we have. I just want hitters thay have a clue what they are doing at the plate.

One of the worst trade proposals I've ever seen and that says a lot.
