Varvaro traded to Red Sox for RHP Kurcz

This. I figured he is one of the guys to be released for a while because it seemed like Hart was intent on Kohn going forward. Carpenter is still on my hit list though.

Kohn has never thrown more innings than appearances (in the majors) which means he isn't a multiple inning guy or his stuff isn't as good after one inning.

Varvaro only had six games where he pitched more than an inning last season, that was in 54.2 innings. Kohn only pitched half as many innings as Varvaro in the Majors last year but still had three games in which he pitched more than an inning (average would be pretty identical to Varvaro by rate of innings pitched, etc). Further, Kohn pitched 53 innings in the Majors in 2013 and five games were more than an inning with the exact same amount of 2 inning games as Varvaro had for us last season.

That said, I was mostly trying to be funny with the whole reason to believe bit. But either way Kohn is certainly a possible replacement for Varvaro's role on the team.

Go back and look at Varvaro's 2013 numbers as far as multiple innings go...

I know Varvaro pitched a lot of innings (including a lot of multi-inning) games in 2013. But IMO you still overstated your case here:

Plus outside of 2013, we could say the same about Varvaro including the minors outside of Varvaro's days as a starter.

To sum it up, I believe it would be a mistake to rule out Kohn as a legit replacement. Further, I wouldn't be surprised if Kohn did even better than Varvaro did for us last year.
 
I don't get this at all. Varvaro is a solid reliever. He's not a stud, but he posted a 3.21 FIP and 3.15 xFIP. Very solid. Need guys who can give you good performances when you need to rest someone or just don't want a game to get out of hand.

Maybe he's got some kind of knock, but I don't get cutting him, he's still got 1 year beofre he's arb eligible, so we save a few 100K? If we need to clear up 40 man spots I can list several others to cut, How about Costanza? How about one of Pastor or Gosselin? There were other opportunities than to cut our 4th best reliever. We'll have ditched 2 of our 4 best relievers, and added, well Jim Johnson.

Also why aren't we actively pushing Russell on the market, someone needs a quality reliever, no point keeping him around for no compensation.

Why? Cause of that one homer when Fredi was a moron and didn't bring in his closer to face Dodgers murderers row? THat's not on him, that's on Frediot.

Over the last 2 years, Carpenter has been our second best reliever. There's no reason to hate him, enjoy him until the train goes off the track.

Not a fan of Carpenter, just a fan of the facts. Only one close to him is Walden, he has a lower ERA than Walden, lower xFIP, slightly higher FIP but like 30 more IP or something liek that. It's a clean cut victory for him.

Obviously our pen is Kimbrel and the other guys, but Carpenter has been the best of the other guys.

Carpenter was great in low leverage situations the first year with us, but in the 8th inning give me Walden and even Avilan before Fredi broke him. Further, I don't expect Carpenter's first year with us to be the norm. I expect he is a lot closer to what we saw last year.

Games with more than 1 IP at the MLB level:

Varvaro: 36 games (157 career appearances) = Once every 4.36 appearances

Kohn: 11 games (126 career appearances) = Once every 11.45 appearances

As I noted, outside of 2013 when Varvaro pitched a lot of multi-inning games that wasn't the norm for either reliever. But Kohn hasn't played for Fredi yet, give him a year and we'll fix those numbers right up. :)

BTW, some were concerned over Varvaro's decline in velo late last season (and wondered if it may be a factor in letting him go): @gondeee

Carpenter had virtually the same FIP and xFIP last year as in 2013. Virtually same SIERA as well. He was unlucky last year, he was lucky the year before, that's why I did the 2 year sample, cause the truth is in the middle.

Even if you were to say that every one of Varvaro's appearances in 2013 were 1 inning (he had 17 of 1+) you still get this:

Varvaro: 19 games of 1+ IP (157 career appearances) = Once every 8.26 appearances

Kohn: 11 games of 1+ IP (126 career appearances) = Once every 11.45 appearances
