Varvaro traded to Red Sox for RHP Kurcz

In high leverage situations. I'm fine with him as part of the pen, dont' use him in the 8th though for ****sake.

As long as Varvaro and Carpenter are Braves, Fredi will continue to do that at times. Maybe if we bring in some new blood he will think twice, okay probably not lol.

I'm OK with Carpenter in the 8th. Hell I'm OK with Varvaro if we have no better option. But when we did havebetter options and he used them is when I had an issue.

Carpenter had virtually the same FIP and xFIP last year as in 2013. Virtually same SIERA as well. He was unlucky last year, he was lucky the year before, that's why I did the 2 year sample, cause the truth is in the middle.

What the fck is a SIERA?

Kuircz was a stud reliever in Double-A, coming off 2013 TJ surgery (of course). Originally acquired from Cubs as comp for Theo Epstein!

34 G, 3-2, 3 Saves, 2.14 ERA
In one game, struck out five in 2.1 IP. Total: 42 IP, 32 hits, 54 Ks.

Scouting Report: Right-handed reliever with small frame and lean build. Loose thrower. 3/4 arm slot. Balanced delivery with easy landing. Fastball sits 92-93 mph and can top out at 95 mph. Average command. Tends to work in the upper tier of strike zone too much. Capable of generating swings-and-misses with fastball. 75-80 mph 3/4 breaking ball. Has curveball look in lower reaches of velocity and slider look in upper reaches. More of a slurve. Average offering. Potential to tighten up to create more consistent power and depth. Also mixes in a developing 82-85 mph changeup. Shows arm-side fade. Tends to float too much presently. Solid-average potential. Converted to a reliever in 2011. Strong makeup for age. Sixth- or seventh-inning reliever potential at major-league level.

Let me get this straight. We traded away a good, established major league 7th inning reliever who we still had under team control for 4 more seasons, for a prospect that if all goes right hopes to be a 7th inning reliever? Damn are we trying to lose next year? Very odd move.

Hat-tip to soxprospects.com - he was #40 on their 2014 list - "stud" might be a little bit of a stretch.

I ask again since I'm confused...

What more did anyone expect to get for the 12th man on our staff???

We claimed him off the waiver wire, used him for two years until we needed his roster spot, and traded him for a guy who can probably turn into him in a year or two.

I would expect that we would rather keep a proven 7th inning reliever than a prospect that would hope to become one some day, especially since our proven reliever is still costing league minimum.

Under team control for four more years, but certainly profiles as the type that as soon as they start making money they get nontendered.

We got a mid level guy. It's not the end of the world.

Decent middle relief prospect that doesn't have to be added to the 40-man. High K rate and high BB rate. Reports say he tops out at 97. Between Jaime / Kohn / Kurcz, decent chance that at least one will turn into a multi-year contributor in the pen.

Return seems fair for Varvaro. I wish him well. He made it to his arbitration years without being non-tendered, which is a noble accomplishment for a low-leverage RH reliever.

No, it's not the end of the world, but still a move that says "no mas for 2015". Makes the Markakis deal look even more strange.

That's what I'm missing I guess - why a team that's trying to trade its best player and restructure its roster with younger players who are going to be ready to compete in 2 years worries about having a "proven 7th inning reliever". Varvaros are all over the place and are not hard to find. In the event we land someone to take the 5th spot in the rotation from him, Hale's a much better option.

Exactly...I'm a fan of Markakis and think he's a great fit. But makes no sense committing that money when we're not going to be competitive.
