Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

Rated #5 by BA in June 2014 in their mid-season Top 50 list soon after he was traded.

Fair enough I guess, so one example I guess in the past 20 years or so. Regardless you and I both know they aren't moving Moncada after the money they spent on him.

The money is sunk cost. If Moncada was some obscure 25th round pick who proved himself to be a top 5 prospect his value to the Red Sox would be the same.

I'm not insistent that Moncada come back in a trade for Teheran. But that's the kind of value what I would be looking for. There are other combinations of prospects that would generate similar value.

It's pretty simple here. Either somebody pays our asking price or we keep him. They need us we don't need them.

I think Wil Myers for James Shields would be another one.

I'd do that for Teheran. They would have to throw in at least Swihart for Viz. We have all the leverage in this situation and we'd better use it.

And while I see no chance Moncada's dealt (under any circumstances), I'd agree with those who want the most ridiculous returns if we were to trade Julio. While he is - arguably - the most valuable chip anybody has right now, you could make the argument that we can't afford to (and even shouldn't) trade him.

I understand how many holes we have to fill, but trading Teheran opens a gaping one - even if it helps fill a couple others.

We KNOW who Julio is, and while we all have high hopes for the young guns we simply don't have another one of him - yet. Keeping him greatly softens the realistic scenario that none of the kids actually reaches their ceilings. We've got two "sure things" in Julio and Freddie - while Freeman's not as earth-shatteringly cheap as Teheran, both guys are perennial All-Star candidates controlled through their primes at less than market value. Everybody needs players like that - particularly teams like the Braves who will always have financial constraints.

I can hear all the "experts" condemning Coppy if they get really good offers for Julio and he doesn't move him - and really couldn't care less. We knew Julio was a better Pitcher than Miller all along, so the bar for the return has been set. If you want him, come get him. Would anyone truly ever be upset if Folty and Newcomb actually reached their ceilings within a couple seasons and we were running Teheran out as our #3??? I sure wouldn't.

Yeah but if you can get say Alex Bregman for him that will play every game at a position of need and could be a multiple all star why wouldn't u trade him? With our pitching i'd rather open up a hole in the rotation to fill one in the field.

I completely agree. Bergman is one of the players that I absolutely make a trade for with Teheran. Him, Moncada and Gallo.

Yup. Those three teams have what we want. And we have what they want. The thing is these trades would represent overpays on their parts. But not of the same magnitude of the Miller trade. And we are in a position where we should insist on an overpay.

This Bregman hype is getting out of control. He is a good young/cheap player and that has value but I dont see him as more than a .780-.820 OPS hitter.

I'd say take nothing less than an overpay. Teheran is really valuable for us and he keeps us on track, if not ahead, of our normal curve - but we CAN cut ties for a price. It's a REALLY simple market strategy - you take the surplus package or keep your current quality.

I was one of (if not the first) the first guys on the Bregman bandwagon, but I'm not sure he's enough anymore - certainly not by himself. Or even Gallo or Moncada.

If you're Coppy, you simply can't let the current lack of impact hitters in the system blind you to the fact that you're significantly weakening the big club's rotation for the next 4+ years by trading away a Pitcher who isn't only your best Pitcher, but one who will still be being paid like a #4 SP when his salary is at it's peak. All of the arms we've stockpiled (or any of those bats) will be making more money than Julio will if they simply go year-to-year through the arbitration process. The money in the game today all but guarantees that, and there are no guarantees that any of those younger players will ever give you what Julio does.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying "don't trade him". I'm just saying the return had better be a "slam-dunk" if you do, and I'm not sure there's a prospect out there that fits that description well enough that a one-for-one is possible. As nsacpi mentions, I'd have to have Bregman or Gallo plus. If it's Boston and they want to keep Moncada out of the talks, I'm not interested unless it's Benintendi and Devers or Espinoza.

If I'm creating the gaping hole that will exist if I don't have Julio, I've got to have TWO players that are realistically capable of filling holes by 2018.

Moncada is an unrealistic pipe dream. I think Benintendi could be had.

I never said they would do it... I said they would likely at least entertain it. Benintendi is overrated and would be a huge disappointment for the best SP on the market. Even him and Chavis. Adding Swihart I wouldn't even be happy.

Benintendi, Swihart, and Chavis wouldn't make you happy? Maybe I'm just much higher on those guys than you.
