as for attendance, interestingly the braves didn't fall out of the top 20% or so in attendance until liberty took over the team, more or less. braves fans are fine. ownership is horrible. fans react to that.

I'm not sure I buy the argument that black interest in baseball is increasing. I've coached youth baseball for five years, and have had a grand total of 8 African-American kids on my teams. This is in a city whose population is over 40% African-American. Our league is expensive, but is also very liberal with full scholarships (basically if you ask for one you get it, with little or no income verification). The other teams in our leagues, through various age groups, have similar demographics. Other leagues in our metro area are about the same.

This is anecdotal for sure, but one would think in a city with our demographics (and with an RBI program) we would be seeing increased minority participation. It just hasn't happened yet. I'm glad to see MLB keep trying though. Maybe over the long haul it will take hold.

What more do you think the Braves could have done to attract more African-Americans to games? They had the only all-black outfield in the game for a couple of years, and played the Civil Rights game there. I think they gave it somewhat of an effort, didn't see any results, and effectively gave up.

And yet people don't come to the games. You've just illustrated that it may n fact be that the location is an issue. That's exactly why they're moving the dang stadium.

This move is not being laughed at nationally in any kind of wide manner. I don't care what Deadspin and other places think that just look and say, 'LOL, moving to the suburbs,' without any real knowledge of Atlanta and it's makeup.

The Braves have a huge brand yet only drew tons of fans when they had immense success, and even then it was only for a limited time, before people became used to it. There is a problem there. Maybe, just maybe, it's at least largely due to the location.

I know a ton of people who love the Braves and enjoy games but rarely go because it takes forever, is in a bad part of town, and there is nothing to do there except go into the stadium.

I would bet most of the people commenting here hardly go to games as is.
