GM/Winter Meetings Thread

That's 11 relievers with only 7 spots open, but I would include another lefty in Thomas making that number 12. Plus Kohn would need to be added to the 40-man roster as he's on a minor league deal. While others on the list are out of options so we couldn't just send them to the minors, at least not without them clearing waivers first. Speaking of that, isn't Viz among those out of options now? If so he should be a lock to make the bullpen. The good news is all our lefties besides Russell, and including Thomas, have at least one option remaining. That's if I am correct about Avilan having one left? I think he does anyway (someone correct me if I am wrong). I'm pretty sure the only righties with options remaining are Simmons and Hale (again correct me if I am wrong).

That said, my top 7 from that list would be as follows: Kimbrel, Simmons, Viz, Shreve, Russell, Hale, Kohn. But I know Johnson will get a spot so that would leave out someone from my top 7 (probably either Kohn or one of the three with minor league options left unless Russell is traded). This list also is telling on the need to move at least one of Carpenter or Varvaro. Further, according to Bowman there was some consideration by the Braves about non-tendering Russell (if so that may mean he is going to be moved too).

Regarding options . . . I believe Avilan was optioned in 2012 and 2014 and would have one option year left. Vizcaino had his contract purchased in 8/2011 and was not optioned down that year. He then got hurt and stayed on the major league DL for some time and thus wasn't optioned down for the first time until 2013 by the Cubs when he returned from the DL. Then optioned again I think in 2014, so would have one remaining.

OK thanks, I thought I read somewhere Viz was out of options but maybe that was a mistake. If Viz has an option left that would certainly help, then we could let him work his way back slowly in AAA to start.

Given that information, my 7 relievers would probably be as follows: Kimbrel, Simmons, Shreve, Russell, Hale, Kohn, and Johnson. Though Kohn not being on the 40-man roster could be a factor depending on what we do before hand.

PS: I forgot to add that Bowman also pointed out that the Braves may stretch out Russell as a starter in spring training. So it seems the Braves are considering a number of options with him (trade, starter or bullpen role).

To me, Drew seems someone, like the same with Jim Johnson, we pick up to rebuild value and then flip at the deadline. Low cost, low risk moves. Especially since we probably won't compete this year.

jason hammel close to cubs deal. http://cbsprt.co/1Bs9tEu

I've been waiting to get some pitcher signings to see if there is any corroboration for the view that this is a buyer's market for pitchers.

Chris Cotillo is reporting two years at 9M/year plus option. Hammel projects to be a 1.5 win pitcher. So about 6M/win. Hitters have been going about 9M per win.

With some patience we should do well picking up that fifth starter. I know some are tired of having the Heyward trade in every post, but I think the relative situations for the hitting and pitching markets this off-season is one more reason to be dissatisfied with the return in that trade.

We get it. Really.

Thats the price for an average pitcher. Lets see what the price is for premium pitching which hopefully Miller and maybe even Jenkins develop into.

An interesting comparison is Hammel and Markakis...two "average" players. Hammel actually projects a little higher but is making less. That about sums it up. So far hitters are being paid more per projected win.

Not much less. 2\20 plus option year.

I've been saying all offseason that the Braves need to wait for a good SP option to fall into their lap towards the end of the offseason, and I think that's exactly what will happen if they are patient.

Any trade for JUp and/or Gattis absolutely MUST have positional talent coming back as the major portion of the return.

Agreed on adding a 2014 back-end SP in this way. I'm fine though with the focus of adding a quality SP prospect in an Upton deal and wouldn't interpret that as a mis-read of the market if it happens.

I would focus on getting the best return for Justin and not worry about whether it involves pitching or a player at a particular position. I wouldn't even give much weight to how close to being major league ready the return in. The focus should be almost entirely on value.

I'm okay with DOB. He won't necessarily break news, but he's fairly blunt and honest and he shows his personality. I judge him for what he and not what he isn't.
