REAL FOOTBALL Thread

Every team has their games where this happens. I don't think it means all that much.

And it's not like you know, Matt Ryan hasn't done this before. They dropped 29 on Arizona, and that's with them largely pumping the brakes in the second half. Arizona is by many considered the best or one of the 3 best defenses in the NFL.

BTW on a different note, could you imagine how sick the Lions would be if they had a better QB? Lions and Niners are the 2 teams who's QB has 100% held them back. The talent that Detroit has, if you put a top QB instead of a middling, they'd be great. Obviosuly their RBs suck. but their defense is basically the best in the NFL. WHat's holding them back is Stafford isn't good at utilizing all the weapons he has.

Detroit also can't really run the ball. But that's what makes finding a QB so difficult. Stafford is good, nothing more. If he were very good or great, the Lions would be the Seahawks or Broncos or Pats.

Brutal defensive effort from Atlanta. We just don't have the talent, and the FAs we did bring in aren't pmaying that well to their norms. Tyson Jackson and Solai haven't been THAT good bms the run.

I'd really look at OLB/DE in the draft but I like Landon Collins FS from Bama as well.

Stafford is still young (26 i think). I believe Rodgers was on the bench at the same age. He flashes the talent. Has been incredible the last two games against horrible teams. We have o-line problems as well.

Having said that, he needs to put it all together in the next year or we should start looking at a backup plan.

I agree about his upside. I don't think it's even close to time to consider getting rid of him. There are better QBs, but most are far, far worse.
As I said, no consistent run game and no consistency from the o-line will hurt a QB and ultimately render them ineffective or "not good enough" when in reality it's the supporting cast. Stafford has CJ, and Golden Tate is good, but that doesn't mean much when you can't run the ball and have an average o-line (unless it's Rodgers back there).

Stafford is and will be plenty good enough to win sometime in this league IMO.

Wasn't there a report a month ago that he was leaving?

Yeah - was an ESPN report right before the Jets game... Suh denied it. My guess was a writer looking for clicks.

Suh may very well leave. He is big on his brand, and there are bigger markets to build that. But no team is going to offer him more money

Clowney to have microfracture surgery.

Falcons have dodged that bullet so far. If he had fallen, we would have taken him im sure.

Really Matthews may have been the most impactful player the Falcons were considering who they drafted. Of course there are different systems so it's hard to compare, but Mack and Clowney haven't been much of anything. Falcons do need someone who cna flat out get to the QB across from Bierman, the Babineaux DE experiement is a failure. but Bierman has been a solid DE. Not great, not elite but he would start on most teams. Looking at draft position, Falcons should be able to get someone like Beasley if they make the playoffs or somoene like FOwler if they don't. The other key is they need to take 2, unless a great value pick at a lesser position of need (safety, RB, LB) is there they need to use their first 3 picks to get 2 defensive ends and a right tackle.

Something like Beasley, Odighizuwa and Sambrailo. They need that second DE to rotate in, if they make those picks, re-sign BIerman, maybe resign Peters, but I probably wouldn't. Their DL would look much better. At DE they would have their first 2 picks, Biermann, and Massaquoi as their primary rotation, on the DTs, they'd have Soliai, Jackson, Hageman and Babineaux rotating. I think the issue they've hit is they don't have the depth on line to rotate. I watched a lot of the great Jim Johnson Eagles defenses who made use of lesser talents and they did that largely by rotation.

Falcons have a few tough choices in the offseason, depending on what the guys want. For FA they have Osi, Spoon, Biermann, Bryant, Quizz, Peters, McClain, Antone Smith, Mike Johnson, CLiff Matthews, Yates, Arenas, Wilson, Lowery and Weems. WHile none of thos eguys are indisposable. THe more pressing issue is Julio Jones being on the last year of his deal, they have to lock him up first, thne go from there. For me, SPoon is interesting, obviously a great LB, and a great leader, but he has been out for basically the last 2 years. How much dough would he want?
