I get to agree/disagree with everyone on this one.
First, he appeared to be acting alone (or in a very small group). Appears to be mentally unstable. Was an Iranian refugee who obviously didn't "melt." I can see both sides of the argument about immigrants being allowed to keep semblances of their traditions. But at some juncture, it has to dawn on immigrants that "when in Rome . . ." on some basic principles, particularly separation of church and state.
The thing with ISIL is that they've brought a new angle to the recruitment of terrorists with their effective use of social media, making the lone wolf angle almost impossible to curb. I doubt that our activities in the Mideast had much to do with this guy one way or the other. He was a nut with a grievance.
I believe Australian citizens comprised the largest nationality of those killed in the resort killings staged by terrorists back in 2002 and while that didn't occur in Australia, it probably made them beef up their security measures.
