Are the Braves as hopeless as it may seem?

I would take another 14 division title streak over 1 World Series and 10 years of suck. I'd rather watch a good baseball team for 6 months every year than stare at a trophy for the same period of time.

I dont think it has to be one extreme or the other. Braves aren't planning to suck for 10 years because it was unlikely this team could win a title in the next 2-3 years.

Not always but we aren't talking about a brave team that won it 1 out of 10 years. We are talking about a team that historically always comes up short. Especially the most recent version.

I would say it almost never is.

2014: Giants - not even close. Maddison Bumgardner decided to go all Superman on us
2013: Red Sox - maybe. But then the same team really struggled in 2014 - which half this board seems to think it the true indicator, So I suppose 2013 was a fluke
2012: Giants - Nope

My memory isn't very good beyond 3 years...

But the fact that the Giants have Bumgarner means something.

Sox definitely had the best year in 2013.

I understand the argument but we all compete to win against the best. I'm sorry but winning games in June against the Phillies doesn't do much for me. I think Brave fans might have a different outlook if we had more postseason success in the past.

Well I'll bet you we won't have any postseason success for the next few years... The difference is we won't have June success either

It isn't really a debate about 14 in a row or two and eight years of suck.

14 in a row probably won't be done again for quite some time.

If I couldn't be in the playoffs 14 years straight, I'd rather be good for a long time, say 8 playoffs in 10 seasons, and win 3-4 titles.

Then, you've got the Giants with three in five seasons with two not good seasons thrown in between. And some people are ready to proclaim them a modified dynasty.

Fair or not, a lot of people ultimately are going to judge it by championships.

Thats fine for me because I didn't think we had a chance at winning a world series with the current group. Thats not an indictment on Heyward/Upton because they would still be here if not for the awful BJ contract. I don't need the Braves to win every year. I'm a very patient fan.

After the Max Scherzer signing yesterday, Bovada released updates to their World Series odds and I was surprised how good the Braves' odds were. Bovada has the Mets, Marlins, and Braves all at 33/1 to win the WS. WS odds aren't the same thing as projecting standings, but those odds would suggest that their will be a dog fight for 2nd place in the NL East.

If you order the WS odds from best to worst, the Braves, Marlins, and Mets are tied for 17th out of 30 teams. For reference, the teams in slots 17 - 19 in the final 2014 standings finished with 79, 77, and 77 wins.

Personally, I'd set the over / under for 2015 Braves wins at 75 or 76.

Agreed

Nobody would advocate throwing away 14 division titles for 1 trophy and the rest of the years of suckage. Thats a straw man.

It's actually not. Several people, you included, are saying that titles are the only things that matter.

I dont believe that's what I've said in the past but since I post so much I'm sure it could be found. I've certainly have said that to me titles mean more but that doesn't imply I think regular season is meaningless.

Fair enough. I'd rather watch a consistently good team which routinely gets a ticket to the playoffs, and thereby a chance to win. 2010-2013 weren't wasted years for me, even if we didn't win a playoff series. I'm salty about all of the times we lost in playoffs, but I don't discount the journey and the associated experiences and memories derived from it.

Titles or bust. I am the one who has always said that. Sure regular season wins are neat and all. It's like constantly getting the tip in, but never full penetration. It's fun while it lasts, but in the end you are left pleasuring yourself.

Well those of you who prefer not to make the post season than to have failure in the post season are likely to get your wish. For you Hart is the right GM at the right time.

You act as if you get a ring if they win a title...

I am a fan because I like watching the games. The games are more enjoyable when my team is winning. If my team is consistently good, and is consistently playing in October, I can't ask for much more from an entertainment perspective.

Do you deny that you enjoy a postseason victory more than a regular season victory?

So are you saying you react hte same to a postseason win?

I never said that.

I watch baseball for 6 months out of every year. If you tell me there is a chance the team wins 85 games, I will enjoy a lot of that summer and have hope that if we can sneak into the playoffs, there is a chance.

If you tell me they may win 75, Im far more likely to not go out of my way to watch. Might as well just crop Simmons defensive highlights next year for entertainment.

Honestly, I just find it very hard to believe that any fan here doesn't get more pumped for a postseason win. If you don't then thats your deal. But, if you do then you should ask yourself why that is.
