DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

Going to be even more loaded when the international period starts. Maitan would instantly be #1 or 2.

I disagree with that. I'd probably slot him around 5 to start. Highest potential immediately, but so far away that you can't possibly put him above Swanson or Albies and I'd keep him behind at least Newcomb for now.

I'm happy with the guys we got. I won't lie, I wanted a bat earlier, but I really like the players we got. We got really high-quality guys with the first couple of picks instead of a really good pick and decent guys - I'm okay with that. Let's keep making smart moves!

So, what's the best available board look like now? Who you think we take at #80?

Can't be sure if the Braves have plotted out the bonus structure to include this pick, but if the Reds don't take Horn at 79 (which they should), then he's the big fish. Next would 3B with pop Drew Mendoza.

I feel like it would be planned out because they were talking about how important it is to hit on as many top 100 picks as they can.

I understand what we did and why. But when you pick #3, you expect the guy to be a top 5 prospect in your system. It's a as though we went quality depth instead of premium talent. In this draft, that could have been the right call. It will be years before we know. But on the surface, it's tough to think Anderson is only borderline a top 10 guy for us right now and we drafted him #3. But if you get 3 top 10 guys in a loaded system, it could have been worth it.

Bleacher Report gives Braves a B for Anderson, A for Wentz and A- for Muller. Cumberland gets a B-.

When I look at everyone's top 25 brave prospects, I never see dykstra. What's the knock on him? He seems to be a good hitter... .329/.365/.391.

Outside whose top 20? If they think they got 3 of the top 20 players in the draft what does it matter what MLB.com ranked them? No teams go off those rankings.

literally zero teams go off them. none. they probably don't even glance at them.

Day 1 Grade: A+

The Braves entered the day looking to target high-upside talent, and they wound up with three of the best high school pitchers in the draft. This grade only plays if they can find a way to sign all three guys, but for now they look like the big winners of Day 1.

It's the other way around. Teams don't go off the rankings, the rankings go off teams. Those writers talk to scouts and front office guys to make their rankings.

Looks like I'm going to have to hide my sharp objects. The experts at Bleacher Report only give Anderson a B.

Here's the deal. If you draft and sign either Pint or Groome, you're not going to have the shekels to draft/sign Wentz or Muller. Rumor has it (and putting stock in any rumors during a draft is nigh on ridiculous) the Braves have agreements with these three. People can hyperventilate whether or not that was the correct strategy in creating enough leeway with the slot dollars for three top-25 guys instead of staying closer to slot with the picks, but this has the looks of a solid draft to this point.

As per Anderson, he needs to fill out a bit and as long as he doesn't fill out as much as Williams Perez, he could be somebody. I'm a bit foggy, but I think the last high school pitcher the Braves took at #3 was another kid from a northern clime named Steve Avery. Anderson looks like a late-riser and I agree that can create a mirage of sorts, but he's done the showcases so it's not like he's a totally unknown quantity.

I'd grade our day one as a C.

It was a good day for the organization no doubt, but that had more to do with having 4 picks. We were going to land a number of good players. The question is whether we used those picks wisely.

The fact that we had a top 3 pick and ended up without an elite talent limits the grade to a C. I just can't get on board with that strategy. If we can't sign one of Wentz or Muller then this grade falls to a D-.

This was a quantity over quality approach. We took three solid talents but no elite one. Maybe the numbers game works out and one of them hits big but I'm just not a fan considering our other options at 3.

But it's a quantity of quality. Over 1,200 players will be drafted and we get three who are not only in the top tier, but the top slice of the top tier. I agree it boils down to signing Wentz and Muller, but my guess is they don't draft them if they can't sign them. Perfect Game--the site I trust most in this process--had Anderson as the #4 high school player (ahead of Moniak for what that's worth)
so I think it's unwise to dismiss him.

This isn't basketball where one guy can make a difference.

Don't know where they will go today. I expect a few more bats (the Quinn kid looks like a logical pick but with the little bit most of us know, our logic is easily dismissed). I figure we'll see a college senior (or two) to create a little more flexibility in the pool.

Easy to forget there weren't Bryce Harper's and Strasburgs in this class. Just a muddled top end of the draft. We heard what... 5 different names for the top pick? That should tell us a lot about what scouts thought about the high end talent. Give me three guys in the top 20 of our board, over 1 top 20 guy and a few top 40s. It's an odds game.

I certainly see the other side though striker.

I think we had an okay draft, 3 of the top 25 talents....next year we should be drafting number 1 or 2, I wonder if a guy like Groome doesn't sign with the bosox, goes to college and re-enters the draft next year
