Heres what I would do.
- Trade/release Uggla. If we got someone to take 3 million of his salary we would be lucky
- Trade for David Price. Wood/Bethancourt/Walden/ and one of the low level high ceiling guys like Cabrera or Peraza is close to what it would take. I would offer him 6 years 120 million contract. If he doesnt accept I might consider trading him after the 2014 season depending on the team results. If we make a deep playoff run with him I keep him for another shot in 2015.
- Attempt to trade Kimbrel. We dont need an elite closer, just a good one will do.I wouldnt just give him away so it would have to be a solid deal. Trade market would be limited because not every team can pay a closer big money. If we were lucky we could get a Red Sox/Yankees bidding war. Yankees wont want to replace Rivera with just anyone and the Red Sox have Uehara who had a Kimbrel-esque year but he is 38 and they have him under team control for one more year. We could use some of the players we get in the Price trade
- Attempt to sign Joe Nathan to a 2 year deal. He wants to play for a winner and wants a multi year deal. That gives a 2 year window to develop a younger/cheaper closer. If this doesnt work then a 1 year stop gap like Fernando Rodney. We have umpteen million relievers I could see as closers in the future. Third option is to keep Walden and use him. Fourth option just use Beachy there for a year.
- Attempt to sign Omar Infante. I think it takes 3 years and 6-8 million per year. He's just a solid ball player that we need to balance out the sluggers on the team.
- Sign Freeman long term. Best hitter on the team.
- Re-sign O'Flaherty on a 1 year incentive laden deal.
- Re-sign Hudson to a 1 year deal with an option for 2015
Packages I Imagine in return for Kimbrel. From Red Sox - Garin Cecchini, Bryce Brentz, Deven Marrero, and Drake Britton. Keep Cecchini as future 3B. He an above average defender with good OBP skills with the speed to steal bases and already has half a season at AA. Has power potential but hasnt shown in his HR totals yet. The Rest are mid tier prospects that are close to the majors that I imagine the Rays wanting.
From the Yankees I would ask for Gary Sanchez, Mark Montgomery, and Mason Williams. Rays would definitely want Sanchez and Williams. I dont think Yankees would give up both but its hard to find anything else I like in their farm system. Literally their entire farm system all had down years.
