If we lose this series what then for next year

It will be an interesting off season for sure. I am glad its not me making these big calls.

The only really tough call is at catcher. I think this is the offseason Wren focuses on retention more than acquisition. He has to get Jason and Freddie under contract.

Gattis for Sale crossed my mind too. I think we would have to chip in a bit more but not a lot more.

Not sure how I feel about that. Gattis showed a lot IMO this week against tough pitchers. If he were catching all the time there wouldn't be many negatives about him.

Agreed. I think we'll make a serious offer to McCann. Not the highest, but one that would allow him to come back if he wanted to. The rest of the off-season turns on his decision. If he comes back, it does set up Gattis as a valuable trading chip.

Still don't get why everyone thinks its a smart idea to lock up a 30+ year old catcher to a big deal.

I've looked at the aging curve of catchers who are comparable to McCann at this point in his career. The risk of a big drop-off in performance for players of that type comes mostly at ages 33 or 34. McCann is 29. I would offer him to a four year deal with an option. This would cover ages 30-33 with the option for his age 34 season. There is risk in any contract, but I don't think the risks from that type of contract are unduly high. Of course, sometimes things go badly (see Dan Uggla). But you have to base these decisions on the whole range of probabilities rather than just the worst case scenario.

Yup. Also can't discount that McCann is our team leader and there is value to that.

McCann probably will sign with Texas. They're going to need a catcher, and they've tried to obtain him multiple times already. He'll be able to DH, too. So, this is no big secret. Use this salary savings as enticement for contract for Freeman. He's MVP material. Catcher ends up with some combination of Gattis, Laird and Bethancourt.

Didn't read this whole thread closely, but assuming there are probably some still riding Chris Johnson's ass. Apart from Freeman, he's the only pure contact hitter on the roster. It almost seems laughable now that there was a rivalry with Francisco for 3B. He's the best available option at the position until a prospect is properly developed or acquired.

Uggla's untradeable. It's just not good business to eat contracts, as other mentioned, like they did with Lowe. So, might as well try something creative. On the slim chance that he's not been able to adjust to life without contact lenses, get him to agree to play some winter ball in the Carribean some where. Even more humiliating than not making the post season roster was the fact that Janish did. As a last ditch effort to try and salvage his career, he'd probably be willing to do it. Paternicky might be healthy by ST. So, at least there's "competition" at 2B. Elliot Johnson - why bother? They got him for nothing, plus there'd be more available options over winter.

Thinking Beachy returns OK after the extra months of rest. That forifies the rotation. Makes me wonder about what they'll do with Hudson. Age and recovering from the broken ankle. They might wait out. Would be cautious about going more than year to year. Was previously skeptical, but he proved his worth. Definitely interested in Freddie Garcia as back of rotation starter. Hope the org is as well.

They've got assets to trade. Terdoslavich is about ready. Has power, versatility and switch hits. Should have excellent value in a package with pitcher(s). Somebody mentioned David Price. Is he upcoming FA? If so, he'll be priced out.

BJ Upton - similar situation as Uggla, although he seems like a better bet to turn it around. His downturn is more mysterious than Uggla's though. Usually, he turns it on the 2nd half. Would try and encourage him to play winter ball as well.

I think we bring back Hudson. Gives us six solid starting pitchers--Hudson, Minor, Medlen, Teheran, Beachy, Wood. Wood can start the year as the second lefty in the pen. Someone will get hurt of course or lose form. Most teams need about 8 starting pitchers to get through a season, so a couple guys in AAA will have to contribute as well. I think we'll have better cover from the rotation in AAA next year--Hale, Martin, Thomas, Gilmartin, Northcraft, Schlosser among others. Maybe Poveda if we put him on the 40-man roster. I suspect Hale will also be given a look as our long man during spring training.

I don't think Garcia will be brought back. He pitched a heck of a game last night, but you have to look at the larger picture of how he has performed in the last couple years. He is simply not in the same class as Hudson, Minor, Teheran, Beachy, Wood. And our AAA team will have plenty of starting pitching next year. Don't cry for Garcia though. He's had a long career. And his late season renaissance will lead some other team that has less pitching depth to bring him aboard.

Sadly, I think Medlen is traded and Garcia is brought back. Garcia will be someone to keep the seat warm until one of our younger guys step up.

If we could get a stud prospect or two for Medlen I wouldn't be all that upset but it would suck to see him go be a successful pitcher elsewhere.

Martinez may be an option for the BP as well. We didn't miss him, but he is a solid arm. Beachy should be 100% and full ready to roll. Thats a huge boost.

I don't think we find releif for Uggla. Mac is gone. I won't cry with Gattis back there if he improves his plate discipline. There aren't many perfect players floating around looking for teams, so all of them will have some drawback.

What are we aiming for in a trade of Meds? Prospects? BP arms? Another starter? A hitter or 3b? It is hard to put together at this point.

We should focus on getting prospects IMO. Braves are setup at the major league level even with trading a starter. Maybe get a bullpen arm in the deal but I think we need to focus on restocking the farm for the future if the payroll is going to only be in the 100-110 range.

Garcia is unlikely to be brought back imo. I believe the Braves are capable of stepping back and looking at his broader body of work over the past two or three years and drawing the right conclusion. With the kind of pitching depth we have, there is simply no need for someone like him.

I also don't think it makes sense to trade Medlen for prospects. This group of players is entering its prime contending years. You don't trade a key pitcher for prospects when you are a strong contender.

Braves will trade some of the depth at the top end to address future needs IMO. I don't think Garcia will be there all year but I think he will be in the rotation for the first couple of months.

Only way I see Medlen traded is if we keep Mac to clear some funds.

I think both Medlen/Mac will be gone. Braves are going to have to do whatever it takes to keep Heyward/Freeman. I expect big time 8-10 year contracts being offered this offsesaon.

Garcia needs a MiLB offer and thats about it. There won't be a huge demand for him, and if so let him go if his salary requirements get out of whack.

Medlen confuses the poo outta me. Wasn't he NL September Pitcher of the Month two years in a row now? But come that must-needed first play-off game in October, he completely chokes. Is he just not a big game pitcher? I remember Maddux being pretty lowsy in the play-offs too. Oh hey, the Medlen-Maddux comparison continues.... Just very very disappointed in Medlen for the second year in a row after being near-unhittable leading up to the postseason.
