David Price expects to be dealt

If the Uptons were more stable we wouldnt need Price. Besides the Rays trade for players with a lot of service time left. They might take role players and relievers that are close to free agency but whoever the main centerpiece of the deal needs to be a pre arbitration player.

The Cubs have the prospects, but it might not be wise for boy genius Epstein to wheel & deal yet. He's admitted that they can't be competitive for a couple of more seasons. So, there's not much incentive yet for them to try and make a big splash in the trade market...yet.

When they signed Edwin Jackson (4 year deal out to 2016) they said they envisaged being competitive before his contract runs out. The Cubs prospects have made good progress through the minors. I think they want some pitching in place when guys like Baez, Bryant, Soler, Almora hit the majors. Of course, they'll probably have to trade one of them. But they have a good young nucleus to build around with Rizzo and Castro already in the majors. Plus they'll have another very high pick in the upcoming draft.

If they make a move for Price they will probably also try to extend him. That makes sense for a team with their deep pockets. For us less so.

Can anyone confirm Schuerholz was on the radio today in Atlanta and said we're very interested in Price? Just something my brother in-law told me today.

No way we get Price. Price will net multiple 5 start prospects.

Only shot we have at Price is by giving up Heyward or Freeman and more. And we'd be morons to do that.

Lets run down the competition here.

Yankees - Dont see Rays trading Price to division rivals, it would take virtually their entire farm to do it anyways

Red Sox - Got the ammo but dont see Rays trading price in the division.

Orioles - See Red Sox

Blue Jays - See Red Sox

Tigers - Highly doubt it, seriously lacking in ammo although Castellanos is a good center piece

Royals- Dont have the money

Twins - Not ready to compete yet

Indians - It would be out of character for them to trade for Price, seriously lacking in money as well

White Sox - they are rebuilding, also have one of if not the worst farm system in the game

A's - I could see Billy trading for Price then re-trading him next offseason and getting a better haul than he gave up. Still a long shot

Rangers - Strong contenders although they are reportedly after bats more than starters. Have top notch trading chips in Martin Perez and Jurickson Profar

Angels - Money is an issue but they are all in imo, ammo is lacking but still doable.

Mariners - Need hitting not pitching

Astros - hahahahahahahahah

Mets - If they did then Price would blow out his arm anyways. Highly unlikely

Phillies - Short on ammo and money but you cant rule out the Rube

Nats - They have the ammo but need hitting more than a starter. Unlikely but I wouldnt rule it out

Cubs - Wont rule it out because they did trade for Garza.

Reds - Lacking money

Cardinals - Cant see them willing to give up a big haul of prospects. But wont rule them out.

Brewers - Rebuilding

Pirates - Cant see them giving up the haul of prospects it would take but it would be a bold move. Also need hitting more than starters

DBacks - They were rumored to really want an ace last offseason. They do have the ammo.

dodgers - Cant count them out in their attempt to buy a world series. Their odds go up if they dont win the WS imo.

Giants - Need hitting far more than starters

Rockies - Rebuilding + lack of money

Padres - no

So I see serious contenders for Price as Rangers, Phillies, Dodgers, DBacks, Angels. Longshots being Cubs, A's, Cards, Pirates and Nats. I think the Braves fit into the serious contenders group. Now if the Rays would trade him within the division I would put the Red Sox and Yankees in the serious conteder group.

Good summary. I think the Red Sox have the prospects and young MLers to get it done, same division or not. Other than that, I think it's a toss-up with the leading candidates being the Dodgers, Rangers, Cardinals, and Angels.

Well then they probably shouldn't expect anyone to trade for him and just let him walk without getting anything. Unless the Dodgers/Red Sox get desperate.

There is no stud there. A team will trade a stud prospect for him. The Royals traded Myers for Shields. Shields isn't as good, or as young. Myers was coming off a 37 HR season in the minors.

I don't think it was all that horrible of a trade. The Royals almost made the playoffs, and aren't even close without Shields. It's not easy to find a pitcher like him (wish we had him this year). That trade worked out for them. The worst part was the fact that Davis gave them less than nothing. Odorizzi is a bigger net loss than Myers.

Someone will trade a stud prospect or two for Price. That trade would not be close.

Oh and Wood/Sims/CB would 100% not be enough for Price.

I agree. Their pen is bad even if they re-sign Rodney. I think they could possibly want Walden to be their closer. So Wood/Sims/Bethancourt/Walden would be a damn fine offer. Everyone keeps saying some team will offer a stud prospect but Wood would be a top 25 prospect if he was eligible. Sickels is the most credible top prospect list out right now, BA and BP will release later on, but he has Simms at 60 and which is pretty high praise for a prospect in low A ball. Simms should only go up on that list next year. We can only wait and see what other teams will offer but the Braves can and probably will make a significant offer.

Price to Atlanta makes perfect sense. He's a Braves fan, but he's also best friends with Mike Minor. Ive always felt like Price would end up in Atlanta for some reason. Wood/Sims/CB might not be enough, but its a dang good offer for starters and Id love to see where negotiations went with TB if this was our initial offer. I keep drooling thinking of a rotation with Price, Minor, Teheran, and Medlen.

Would the Red Sox go against their history and put two LH starters in their rotation considering the Green Monster???

If we don't offer up a very valuable major leaguer (Heyward, Freeman, SImmons, Kimbrel, Minor) and the most we go is Wood then expect ot get the deal done, Wood, Sims, Bethancourt, Gattis, Peraza, and a few more.

We have no A+ prospects which you need to get a guy like Price, so if we get the Rays to the table we'll have to offer an awesome young major leaguer in return who they have a chance of signing which is honestly a risk with us cause Jason is pretty close to FA. and both Kimbrel and Freddie are 3 years from FA so not too far. So JMO the guys we have they'd want the most are Minor and Simmons and I don't know if we can part with either of them because I don't believe the trade makes us that much better unless it's a Prado type of situation where we trade Minor and not much more or Simmons and not much more.

If we go that route say we do Simmons, Salcedo, and a few of our good non-Sims pitching prospects. We open up a second need, a SS. Now we may potentially luck out and can flip some prospects for Alexei Ramirez or Starlin Castro so we can replace Simmons but not too well. Or we could sign someone but those options are attractive.

Basically a trade for Price wipes out our farm or takes an important young player from us and I don't know if I'd even be excited for that trade since odds are he will leave via FA anyway. We can't afford all the young guys. He would make us a hell of a contender next year and 2015 then we'd have to nuke the team because Justin, Jason, Kimbrel, Freddie, and co would all be getting or on th everge of getting very expensive.

I agree with all of this. I don't see how we match up well and not sure its the right move for us. Unless that package of prospects gets TB curious its not going to happen. I also do not want to trade Peraza.

I just remember everyone in here saying we have no shot at getting Justin Upton unless we deal Simmons, etc..

The offseason is unpredictable.
