Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

Win or lose, still love my Braves

This is tough, but the sun always finds a way to shine. Even if that happens in 2015.

Can we stop all the I told you so, no way I told YOU so stuff? Makes it unpleasant to visit the board.

Well when the masses kept telling you how wrong you were about a need the team had or didn't have...it's a nice reminder to let them know they are wrong.

Guy I feel sorry is Medlen. Worked his ass off trying to get back, was a bulldog in the mound, and became an absolute stud for us, and this is how it ends.

This organization is cursed, I can't think of one that has had worse luck, whether its terrible play or flukey things in big games or the inability to keep a roster healthy throughout a season or at least critical parts. Is there anyone that has lost more players than we have?

Just 5 years ago I was excited about the prospects of having Hanson, JJ, and Medlen at the top of the rotation. Today all 3 are no longer major leaguers due to injuries of some sort.

Makes me wanna throw up

Are you happy now? I'd rather be wrong if it meant the Braves were still ok.

Trust me. My stomach is as sick as yours. Medlen is one of my favorite players.

Tough to imagine us fighting for even a Wild Card spot. :(

You didn't predict three injuries to starting pitchers.
The Braves franchise tendency to have pitchers injured means nothing.
If Beachy ended up not being OK, Hale is a totally fine #5 candidate.
Most teams are in trouble when 2-3 starting pitchers are hurt. In fact, almost ALL of them. It's borderline impossible to plan for that.
I don't know what you were right about. The organization was hopeful for Beachy, but not relying on him.
Minor and Medlen having ailments is a different wrench, but there isn't much that can be done. Show me a starting rotation that has 6-8 potential all-star SPs. You won't find one. We had a 1-5 that could have all put up ERAs well below 4.
Our SP depth was among the deepest in the league.

As soon as Beachy went down last season I questioned if he could ever pitch again in the majors. I was worried about his health from the get go. Now none of us know what is going on and I am not going to automatically assume the worst. Just that I questioned his ability to stay healthy for months now, but I was told time and time again he's fine.

I'm sick and tired if this garbage. I want to win a World Series and do it so with my favorite players actually on the field, not in the freakin hospital.

I'm hoping against hope that Medlen doesn't have anything too serious. If we lose him...well there's always 2015.

2015?

Not gonna happen. Tehran will be recovering from TJ and won't return til late in the year.

Simmons will blow out his knee turning a double play.

Gattis in the offseason will chop his right wrist off with an axe while chopping wood at his house.

And Freeman will get bit by a mosquito in spring training and will come down with encephalitis and end his career.

And Mike Minors bladder will explode after coming down with a huge infection after nailing Ugglas wife.

2047, then.

That's only a little deluded.

Did (do) we have talented arms? Certainly. Were (are) those arms capable of stepping into a major league rotation? Clearly not.

2047, then.

MechaHeyward will have a virus in his HPU

Zombie Smoltz will lose his pitching arm in spring training.

Freddy Garcia will still be starting and be our best starter.

Freddie Freeman Jr. will get a nasty case of polio that will cripple him but he'll still hit .260.

I vote we all step back from the cliff and allow them to actually play the games. I suspect it will be less than we hoped, and more than we are expecting right now.

I am anxious to watch the team play this and future seasons.

Changing the subject a little, Matt Lipka has handled the bat well in his first big league camp and is showing the speed and tools that made the team draft him with their first pick in 2010. To this point in his career, he has not produced to his draft status. He was your typical high upside guy out of high school who is a great athlete with tons of speed and tools, but his baseball skills were very raw. I wonder if Lipka's performance in spring training to this point may propel him into a break out year where he becomes a legitimate prospect?

The Braves seem to like the tools guys from the high school level (speed/power/athleticism), and the drafted a trio of them in 2012 in Justin Black, Connor Lien, and Fernelys Sanchez. Their development has been very slow to non existant at this point. Kind of curious to see if this year's draft will produce some "toolsy" high upside high school bats.
