Trade deadline thread

The Detroit #Tigers are definitely trading starters Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Lorenzen, it’s simply a case of seeing which team blinks first with their high price tag.

Saying the price tag is high doesn’t mean anything. Every player who has ever been on the trading block has had a “high price tag”. I swear no works less hard than the rumor monger sports journos

Lorenzen makes sense because he can start a playoff game or move to the BP in the event all of Strider/Fried/Wright/Morton are in top form in October.

EdRod makes sense because he is the best SP available who isn't being paid Cohen-stupid money. His downside risk could be nasty though with that opt out.

Verlander makes sense because that .282 xwOBA shows he's still an impact SP, but I just can't envision the Mets and Braves coming together on a trade of that magnitude.

Impact BP arms always make sense because no team will ever say no to a high leverage BP piece, not even the Braves.

Lorenzen would be fantastic McHugh/Chavez insurance. With how few innings starters throw in the bullpen I feel like we need better options to bridge the 4-6th innings.

I could see the Braves getting Verlander for someone like Grissom if they ate a large chunk of his contract. It would all depend on how much money we have and if AA thinks it will hamstring the team for the next couple of years.

My guess is the Braves would have to send Grissom and at least someone else like Smith-Shaver, on top of the Mets only having to pay down a little of the contract. They aren't going to trade that kind of piece to the team they are chasing in the standings

The Tigers tanked the trade value of both Boyd and Fulmer, completely wasting their value on losing teams due to moronic asks. They are well on their way to doing exactly the same thing with these 2 SPs.

They are in the running for most incompetent MLB FO.

We'll see what they do over the next 28 hours. They have a new GM who was hired 11 months ago, he was pretty highly regarded and learned under Farhan Zaidi in San Francisco. I don't think it's crazy for them to wait this out until closer to 6pm tomorrow, especially when there aren't a ton of obvious above average starters that will be moved.

The Rangers were able to get a decision with Scherzer that he wouldn't opt out when they traded for him. I imagine ERod doesn't have a no trade clause so he doesn't have as much leverage as Scherzer but expect something similar to go down. Teams will need assurances one way or another about the opt out before making the deal.

That's what I would assume too. Teams will want Rodriguez to make a decision now rather than later before giving away better prospects. My guess is that they works out a deal and offer E-Rod another few million to make that decision now.

Yeah but Scherzer is getting top dollar and Rodriguez isn’t. If Rodriguez finishes the year strong then he’s gonna opt out for more money no doubt. Only way there is a reassurance is if a new contract is worked out and I’ve never seen that happen at the trade deadline.

Most likely, either the team trading for E-Rod or the Tigers will have to turn some of his future salary into a bonus of sorts, in order to entice him to make a decision now.

I think it's more of a game of chicken with teams over E-Rod than anything else. The Tigers have a full day to wait and see if someone will up their offer. I doubt teams will fight over the opt out, just work it into what they're willing to offer. This is a very different situation than Scherzer. E-Rod wont make $40 million next year and tens of millions wont be changing hands.

Aaron Civale to the Rays for a top 40 prospect (50 FV)

Civale is essentially the veteran version of Bryce Elder so maybe this is a nice reminder to us all how valuable Elder is.

The standings this year don’t mean a damn thing to them since the race is over. They may not want Verlander on the Braves next year, but if they can get out from under that contract, they might seriously consider it.

The odds that we don't win the division are very, very low. Even without making a trade we have a far better roster than anyone else in our division. That doesn't bother me.

What concerns me is we're seeing our biggest competition in the playoffs getting better. The Rays and Rangers have both added significant pieces and those two teams are the closest to us in run differential. If the Dodgers add much more they could challenge us for the best team in the NL. I'd like to see AA add something just to bolster the roster and keep pace with other clubs.

Wow, nice pickup for the Guardians in that trade. Kyle Manzardo is currently #31 ranked prospect on Fangraphs.

If they're smart (and the Mets front office generally isn't) then they'd not care if Verlander is on the Braves roster next year. The Mets are unlikely to be terribly competitive next year and will be especially hard pressed to try to claw the division away from a much more talented Braves team. They need to be focusing on getting better and younger and forget about what the Braves are doing.

2.5 years remaining control. They did manage to get 1 very good prospect in return, but overall it seems light imo. At least it seems that way to me considering most everyone is looking for pitching and he is a cost controlled starter. I feel like the Mets got back an equal or better prospect in exchange for a 40 year old Scherzer making 40 million dollars.

Civale has two more years of team control, likely at a very affordable rate. The return seems right, maybe even a little light considering what some others have gone for.

If we add a starter like E-Rod or, less likely, Verlander, then Morton could be weapon out of the pen in the playoffs. If we go with a 3 man rotation of Strider, Fried, and New Pitcher, we could use Morton in relief.

In his first time through the order this year, Morton has a 10.93 K/9, 3.64 BB/9, and an xFIP of 3.25. Let him go max effort and add a little velocity to the fastball and he could be extremely tough out of the pen. Just another way a top arm could help us out.

This reminds me just a little of the offseason…”If we don’t address LF and SS, we are likely headed for a third place finish in the division.”

I want to see us upgrade as well, but trust that AA will do it without compromising our future.

Our future is literally playing everyday... Nothing in the minors is risking that. Someone like AJSS and other pitchers can surely help the cause.. but this team is going to be great no matter what.

We will see what they do this offseason, I am sure they are more than willing to throw crazy money at Ohtani, etc.
