The problem, according to major-league sources, was that the Braves got ahead of themselves, thinking they had money to spare while discussing the possibility of voiding the contract of another pick.
That pick received one of the team's highest signing bonuses, but had a pre-existing medical condition that he did not disclose to team officials, sources said. The Braves did not initially realize that if they voided the contract, the money still would count against their bonus pool, because the player already was signed. Thus, they could not go ahead and sign Anthony, too.
That was from Rosenthal regarding Anthony.
I'm very curious who the injured draft pick is. Considering it's one of our higher paid, pre-signed players I would assume its either Cumberland or Wilson.
The Nelsony situation is weird... It seems neither side has ANY leverage... which gives both sides extreme leverage.
The prospect of Nelsony not signing is a terrible one for both sides. Just a weird situation.
It still seems like Nelsony has the leverage though... because whether he doesn't sign at all or signs for more than $10K, then the Braves are screwed... so the question is would be the Braves be willing to sign him for more because not doing so wouldn't make a difference

I haven't made a peep about the Anthony thing, because it just didn't sound like there was anything in it. Too bad for the kid—who was quite gracious about it—and for the team, but the kind of thing that can happen under the circumstances, with so many moving parts.
If Rosenthal is right and it happened because we didn't know the rules? That's different. That's ****ing stupid, and embarrassing. That's being, frankly, bad at your job. There's no excuse not to know the rules. It is like—although with more import—the Bonifacio callup flub from earlier in the season. Not the Braves Way.

It's unacceptable for the Braves not to know this rule going into the situation, but that's also a really dumb rule. If something is severe enough to warrant a team voiding a contract, it's hopelessly dumb that it should still count against the bonus pool.
It is an egg on the face moment, but you are making a little more out of it than it really is maybe.
They had an unusual situation and didn't immediately know the rule. I think that suggests they need to tighten up the legal department and perhaps have a little more centralized control of message.
But it is a lot of talk about something that wasn't actually a big deal. People get so excited about slight disappointments for young adults.
Dude thought he was going to Auburn, then he thought he might be a Brave, now he's going to Auburn because he won't sign for slot. Life hasn't really been ruined.
This reveals yet another problem area - not only did we not know the rule, apparently our doctors weren't thorough enough to catch something serious enough to consider not signing someone in a supposedly thorough physical.
Anthony's going to be fine. It's not about him, or about failing to sign a pick.
It is, frankly, inexcusable not to know the rules. It's akin to a player forgetting how many outs there are during a playoff game.
We know we're not the prettiest girl at the dance, but wouldn't you think we should know the steps?
Is there a pitcher on the DL already? An over slot guy?
I don't think the team doctors had anything to do with this. It sounds as though the player in question did not reveal the medical issue to the Braves. I could be wrong, but that's how I read it.
