2016 Presidential Primaries [ SUPER TUESDAY | 3-1-'16]

I re-read the link (I remember reading it in January) and must have missed where he condemned or warned of the language and spirit of the Trump campaign. I didn't see him demand an apology to McCain or speak out, against the myoginistic blather aimed at Kelly or Clinton but he did misjudge the heft of testosterone of misters Bush, Rubio etal. Misunderstanding and standing up to a bully are two completely different things
So, spare us all his self serving shallow insights

Or, we can excuse Trump because , you (Douhat as well) know, Obama never really proved ...

which is what is at the heart of GOP circa 2016
isn't it?

Oh my bad, the Chinese currency - I mock -- again

I think there's a logical fallacy or two there. Hey, but what do I know?

Oh, and you can just stop with the "we can excuse Trump" nonsense. No one here is coming close to that though in your mind you think so - makes it easier for you to do what you do.

When I try to read your posts, I have a better insight into why Trump is doing as well as he is.

Figured you to be a Trump guy OHawk. He's preaching your sort of populism (in regards to NAFTA and the like).

Well I do agree with him on that, you know that. I also think he would succeed in the one area that I blame/disagree with President Obama the most, when the chicken**** Repubs in Congress pull one of their McConnell-esque spoiled brat 4 year old tantrums, Obama tends to just withdraw and go and do what he wants via executive order and while I can see his point about trying to deal with people like that, I'd much rather him call them out for the BS behavior and paint them for the partisan pricks they really are. You know Trump would name names and they'd simply stop that crap.

Those are two areas where I agree with Trump, to be honest I can't think of any others

You've preached populism for a long time my friend. I know it's not that unseemly, xenophobic type that the Donald is peddling, but it's actually of a sort that Douthat has written of before. I think it's a worthy message, just wish it hadn't been co-opted by such a sleaze-ball in Trump.

Your "tribe" has whistled past the grave yard for close to 50 years.

You can stack all of the "couple of logical falacies" next to one another or split whatever hair you like but the end of the day, Donald Trump and all he has come to represent is your nominee.

Kinda late in the game to say, "Who... Me? "

Just own it and move on

I don't know the Douthat fellow you guys are talking about but yeah I"m not xenophobic nor do I like violence to anyone who dares to disagree with the party line. I just figure with Trump if I agree with him on any tiny tidbit of anything I'd better get it out there, because by another 15 minutes or so he'll have effed that up as well.

As to Douhat, he is as complicit in the rise of Trump as anyone.

He has had the platform to denounce this sordid behaviour for as 50 pointed out for close to a decade.

Why no Peggy Noonan or Ann Coulter on mideast policy?

You are a sad character.

a wise woman once said " when they lose on the policy they argue the politics. When they lose the politics they make it personal" I paraphrase

There's no win with you though 57. You've got your "truth" and you are seldom convinced otherwise. To continue to argue with you is insane - the proverbial banging your head against the wall. And you frequently present ad hominem arguments so it seems quite hypocritical of you to play that card.

Let me fall prey to insanity:

As complicit as you? Are you a part of the "anyone"?

Am I complicit in the violence and mayhem of FTP? Are you?

Say we all are complicit in the sins of all of our fellow members of society, does that mean that we should dismiss everything everyone of us then says?

Do you demand that your favorite writers denounce to my level of approval all the antics of the fringes of your team? I don't think you do. Why not?

I have no idea what you mean by your last question. Care to explain?

I suspect you're right... but some of the worst dictatorships in world history were of socialist regimes. It's tough to avoid when you give that much authority to the state

To illustrate this, Sanders has gone as far as praising other socialist countries in where the economic ruin was quite apparent... This quote for example:

When asked about the food shortages provoked by the Sandinistas’ voodoo economic policy, Sanders claimed that bread lines were a sign of a healthy economy, suggesting an equitable distribution of wealth: “It’s funny, sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is, that people are lining up for food. That is a good thing! In other countries people don’t line up for food: the rich get the food and the poor starve to death.”

Okay, I guess I'll have to go back and read every dang article he wrote at Harvard, The Atlantic, and the NYT to see if he checked off every box y'all think he must in order for any editorial he writes now to have value. You guys are amazing. You really are.

Douthat is one of the most thoughtful writers on the right but since he's on the right he's no good. No, instead 57 prefers Muckraker.

That's not what I'm saying and you know it. 57 said that Douthat was silent on Trump and you said he was probably still in college when Trump was playing Birther-in-Chief. All I've pointed out is that Douthat was in a position to denounce those shenanigans and he didn't, so 57 isn't totally off base here.

I frankly don't care about Douthat one way or the other. He's kind of in the David Brooks mold in that he is very intelligent, but, again like Brooks, his constant hand-wringing seems to forget that there are people down here on the ground.

No, I said: "A few years out of college?"

Do you know he didn't denounce the birther stuff? Have you read all of his editorials? I haven't. I don't know. I don't assume he did or didn't.

Am I the only one who thinks the rise of Bernie Sanders is as bad/worse than the rise of Donald Trump?

I don't think you're the only one that thinks that, but I think you're also not the only one who thinks maybe Donald could actually be worse than Sanders.
