2018 Offseason And Targets

The only major league players with much value we should consider trading are Newk, Camargo, and maybe Dansby and Gausman. All other players are not easily replaceable and/or would just create another hole.

Camargo isnt replaceable given he's basically our Marwin Gonzalez/Zobrist/Chris Taylor who can play all over the field. He would be a big loss.

Bowman said Folty and Ender could be traded, Ender doesnt surprise me but Folty? Our SP is already a big weakness, that wouldnt make any sense.

This is a honest question: has Bowman printed anything at all in the last two years that suggests he knows anything about what the Braves are going to do?

Maybe there was something, but I sure don't remember it.

Folty makes the most sense to trade imo. Only 3 years of team control left and we have a ton of pitching prospects to replace him with. I know people are fixated on "proven" players but its not realistic to fill every spot with players with a track record of MLB success. Folty is most likely at peak value right now because even if he improves upon 2018 he will have 1 year less of service time. Theres also the risk of regression and injury which is always high for a pitcher, especially one coming off their first good year. It doesnt make a lot of sense in terms of 2019 but it makes a ton of sense for every year after that.

I'd trade Folty before Ender, Ender is part of the heart of this team. But it would take a serious overpay for me to trade either player.

Braves might have pitchers to replace him but will any be as good as him? That is a better question. I still dont see how trading him makes this team much better. I'm not sure i'd pay him big money but i'd keep him until he's a FA, then someone in the Pipeline replaces him.

You are right his value is probably peak but whats the point of moving him if thats true, we dont know.

Acuna seemed better in CF but if it was Ender and a couple prospects for Kluber, thats intriguing.

Kluber/Folty/Gausman > Kluber, Gausman, Newk/Julio.

it depends on if someone makes an offer willing to overpay for him for me. But i doubt that happens.

True, and I'm not advocating we trade him, but there are decent replacement options on the market with Marwin Gonzalez, Asdrubal Cabera, Jed Lowrie, or DJ LeMahieu. Marwin is probably the most expensive among those, but still should be semi-affordable. But someone would need to value Camargo as a legit 3-4 win player and line up a package commiserate with that.

im not trading Ender in that deal as it will downgrade the defense in CF, make another hole in our outfield, and take away a player that is part of the heart of this team.

Newcomb and Teheran are the starters I'd be interested in trading.

I have a hard time seeing how Folty could be dealt pre-season. Maybe for a big position player with control or multiple win now pieces that add up to more than the sum. In conjunction with other moves to shore up pitching.

But you could argue that now is the correct time to cash out on him, selling high while he still has control.

But the Braves aren't quite the Rays, so I don't think that's how they have to operate. If the Braves fall out at the deadline though, they might want to explore it.

I definitely like the idea of selling high on established MLB players and am glad to see Folty's name mentioned. Personally, I think there's a much better chance he takes a modest step backwards to a 2-3 WAR player versus maintaining a 3-4 WAR level.

Camargo is a good fit for Atlanta's roster, but I think if there is someone willing to take him as part of the Braves making a major upgrade to their starting team that you should consider it.

Depending on what you have spent, you can come up with feasible alternatives in free agency and through other small trades.

im not saying you're wrong but if im trading him i'd need an overpay by some team.

I could see it being the best time to do so, but seeing someone offer the kind of deal it would take for me to pull the trigger seems less likely.

Alex Anthopoulos: "We’re talking about some things. I wouldn’t say we’re close. But we’ve definitely had some conversations about (trading) some players off the big league team."

it would be funny if the players mentioned are no one rumored.

The problem with trading Folty is there's still ceiling left. With his stuff, if he were ever able to put it all together he becomes a legit TOR starter. So it's not like trading high on a guy who had an outlier season where his stats outstripped his skill.

While it's possible and maybe even likely Folty falls back to earth, there's still a non-zero chance he breaks out and becomes an ace. I'd have to have that reflected in the cost.

This could mean anything from mega deal featuring Ender or Folty to sending Sam Freeman to somebody for cash.
