2018 Offseason And Targets

If Machado could be had for 8/200 he should be a Brave, period. Use Swanson as a trade chip, and slide Machado to 3B when a new SS is acquired later. These offers from MLB teams crying poor is a complete joke.

If 7/175 is the new norm for a 5-6 win player going into his age 26 season, I see no way there isn't major labor strife when the current CBA expires.

MLB teams are not spreading their increased revenue to players, and it's going to cause major issues.

Agreed. Heck sign both of them even if you are the Braves. You probably make that up
on ticket sales.

Move Dansby

I’ve been saying this for months- trade Dansby and a package for Haniger, sign Machado, and get JTR.
Move Flow in the Miami deal, and try to move Julio to someone who needs him.
We should be able to afford this, and our farm wouldn’t be too hurt.

Some of Bumgarner's drop in velocity could be due (actually likely due, imo) to the injuries he's sustained the last 2 seasons. So there's hope that an injury free off-season and a full spring training could see him return to form. But the gamble just isn't worth that much. I'd send a 45 FV guy for him or a 50 FV prospect for he and Will Smith. But that's about it.

Bumgarner's velocity is more or less where it was in 2016.

Last season, his stuff wasn't moving as much as it used to.

Possibly having a broken hand/finger (whatever) had something to do with that.

I find it somewhat easier to believe that a 29 year old will pitch better once he doesn't have an injury to his pitching hand than a 34 year old would recover 2 mph of velocity without surgery.

Either way, nearly everyone is correct. The Braves shouldn't pay a ton for MB and the Giants probably can't move him this offseason for his real trade value.

Personally, I think if he can be had for his true surplus value it's a good deal. There is a lot of upside there and it's perhaps an opportunity to get another pick if he performs and is in a position to turn down a QO.

If they can't get him for a small amount, I'm not too worried about it. But I prefer him to someone like Gray by a long shot and it seems to me is reasonable costs and whatever the Yankees are asking for Gray must be pretty similar.

It's difficult to believe that is the best offer he has received. I would rather have Machado than Harper.

I wonder if NY is saving cap space for someone next offseason instead.

I also wonder if the rapidly accelerating decline in cable and satellite subscribers has teams worried about their next TV rights contracts.

i have no problem with the idea of acquiring bumgarner. i think he's a nice candidate to bounce back a bit. it's a small chance he's dealt for what his true value is, tho.

Machado's agent just made a public statement claiming the recent info about the White Sox is completely false (7/175 offer), and basically accused someone of intentionally breaking the CBA by putting out false information in an attempt to tamper with negotiations.

Can anyone recall anything like this ever happening? I can't.

He sounds salty. Negations must not be going how he had hoped.

Yeah he’s salty as hell. He’s mad bc now other teams know what they have to beat. I don’t see either Harper or Machado getting 400 million or close to it like a lot of people thought.

At least MLB owners are smart enough to see the impending tv contract bubble bursting. Just sucks our awful TV deal signed years before the tv contract boom is ending in a few years... after this bubble has bursted.

The Time Warner merger was the second worst thing to happen to the Braves in the 30+ years I've been a fan. We lost a great owner in Ted, then TW shafted us for years with the TV deal to drive up the value of their television assets.

The very worst was MLB scrapping our nationwide TBS coverage.

For the same reason Newk was going to improve his control at age 25 because Randy Johnson improved his control later in his career.

For the same reason Allard could be a good pitcher because Glavine didn't throw hard and was good.

That reason: many posters are very stupid.

We hardly ever agree and have had our rounds but I'll back you here, this needed to be said and not just here but many in our fanbase have become delusional! I'm patient like you but hope for some good news soon just to not have to read through nonsense, pipedreams, etc. We have people arguing for multiple pages over who's right on a damn comparison that has absolutely nothing to do with the Braves and never will. It has become very tiresome to check the thread on a daily basis and see five new pages and think we are close to a deal involving hmm... maybe the Braves and instead we are extending players we don't even have and then arguing against it even though the player plays across the country for the Giants!
